hey guys i have a 97 7.3 with 170k on it, the past 2 days after sitting all night there has been a puddle of fluid that looks like oily coolant and smells like coolant. my oil pan leaks from the front of the motor and looks like its right above the puddle. coolant bottle looks clean, there no other leaks that i have seen. my coolant cap hisses a bit when the trucks shut off like a small leak not sure if that has anything to do with it. any ideas guys.
injector cups?
head gasket?
oil cooler?
cavitation?
What side of the engine is the leak on? If the drivers side I would say the oil cooler. have you checked to see if there is coolant in the oil pan? Loosen the drain plug on the oil pan after it has sat all night. If you have coolant in the pan the water will come out around the loosened plug.
Or a leaking water pump is washing the oil down the front cover...or oil cooler.
is the engine oil level raising?
if u let it sit over night then in the morning loosen the oil drain plug just to a drip.IF there is coolant in the oil it will have settled to the bottom and will come out first since oil floats,or water falls how ever u choose to believe.
i tried to loosen the drain plug before and it just explodes out lol cant seem to get it to just drip. oil level dose seem to rise a bit but this old dipstick is hard to read. it is dry on drivers side. when i turn her on in the am and crawl under you can see the oil bubbling out from the pan around the seal.
Okay. This is what I was trying to post last night. Sometimes, it helps to shut off an engine and leave it off for a while, like 20 or 30 minutes before you check your oil level. Your reading should be much clearer and will often be a little higher than it was right after you shut the engine off. While I realize that these engines are not of Ford manufacture, but this situation is really common on Ford and Nissan vehicles. I believe that in the manual for the engine, it says something about turning the engine off for a half hour or so before checking the oil level.
Just waited and 30 min and checked it , still a little high, crawled under the truck, oil cooler is a little wet but I beleave that's because my valve cover gasket leaks and runs down over it. From what I could see the water pump seems dry. One other thing and I'm not sure if it has anything to do with it is I replaced the t stat with a 203 and new housing all new hoses, but my temp guadge in the truck will come up to the N then climb up to the middle then bounce around its always dropping and increasing seems messed up? Any ideas? The rad bottle cap leaks it hisses when trucks turned off
