Alright, here's the issue. I removed the windshield from my '49 f-1 truck quite a while ago when I started the restoration of this truck. The glass was broken so I tossed it. Since then I've done some extensive rust repair around the windshield opening. Before I start the bodywork around it I would like to make a dummy windshield out of something to install and make sure the opening is okay. Now I need a template to make the dummy windshield. Any suggestions?
It would be great if someone has a windshield out that they could make a template on poster board or paper for me. I can pay for shipping with paypal or money order.
The best thing to make a template from is a piece of masonite, found at any lumber or hardware box store. It's easy to cut with a jigsaw, stays firm and is the right thickness to match the glass.
Start with a piece of cardboard. Do a rough measurement of the opening, cut the cardboard, test fit it an go from there. Once you have the cardboard trimmed to fit the opening trim off an additional amount to represent the width of the rubber seal, I think it's about 1/4"
This is the easiest way to do next to having someone sent you an actual tracing of their windshield. I just chucked out broken windshield, I should have traced it before doing so.
Guys, I think the problem is the shape of the opening may have been changed due to the extent of the repair. I read this as a request for a template so that the original opening can be verified. If this is the case I have the windshield out of my cab and can make a template of the inside of the opening for the windshield. Or do you want / need a tracing of the glass to replicate that?

You're correct, I didn't comprehend the subject correctly.
I've thought about making tracing of the glass in the parts trucks I've had and just kept forgetting to do it. The next best thing would be to make an actual CAD drawing of all of the glass. There are commercial places that will print out a full sized drawing so if you had a CAD drawing someone could emial the drawing and the other person could have it printed.

Thanks, you worded it better than me. If I could get a tracing of the glass that would be wonderful!!
As far as just buying the windshield now, it would just be another part laying around and I'll probably buy locally and have them install when it's painted.
There is a way to get an accurate file of the glass without an autocad drawing. If someone who has a good piece of glass would lay their windshield on top of a 1 inch graph grid with the center of the windshield being the X and Y origins we could generate a grid layout table that could be used by anyone. For example if the glass were a 10 inch square the origin (center of the glass) would be X0,Y0. The corners would be discribed as X-5 Y5, X5 Y5, X5 Y-5, X-5 Y-5 If you graph the result and connect the dots you would have a 10 by 10 square. The problem is it is a boring process to graph in fine detail but with a long flat span it is easy. I don't have access to my glass as it is in storage or I might attempt it. The corners would have to be done in 1/4" increments to get nice looking slopes. It should be possible to graph a left side and invert the numbers in the X plain for the right X- Left and X+ right

I have cut templates from 1/4" posterboard for 48-52 windshield, door glass, vent glass and 51-52 rear glass. I used glass that came out of parts trucks.
I can send you a tracing made on some butcher type paper as soon as my wife brings some home from her preschool on Monday. PM or email me with your info.

Ilya, would you send me a set? I would like to make a CAD drawing so I could email them to people who want them.
