Looking to buy a good how to book. I am rebuilding a429 for my 78 crew cab. I want a step by step book. Would also be nice to offer some proven parts combo for different applications. I will be towing a lightweight jetboat and camper. If you have such a thing please post title and author here.
I think I saw this same question on the 460ford.com forum. That forum is probably one of the best resources for what you want.A book that I bought is called How to rebuild Ford V8 Engines by Tom Monroe from HP Books. It's fairly informative regarding 429/460 engines but is somewhat dated. It covers 351C,351/400M and 429/460 engines.I actually learned alot of general 385 series info from that book.As far as engine build specs ie: clearances, torques specs etc,I just used a Chiltons Manual for engine specs.General engine building knowledge would be more beneficial than any book could provide you.The 429/460 main shortcomings is the cylinder heads. With proper porting they can be made to be very effective in making power. As far as cam selection goes, choose a cam with more lift and duration on the exhaust side vs the intake.460ford.com has a sticky that lists parts needed for specific horsepower/torque combos.Use the search option and you'll find plenty of info to help with your build.
