I have a 2000 Ford E150 Van with 5.4L and auto trans. I left the lights on and ran the battery dead. Charged it back up and now ever since then, when I am going 50-60mph and let off the gas, the van freewheels for a short distance and then acts like it shifts out of overdrive and pulls the van down like its not in freewheel mode anymore. Any suggestions?? Only has 73K on it.
I can't be sure about what your discribing but there is a a function that happens when you do this.
In OD at cruise, the converter is locked up as it should be.
If you suddenly let off the throttle the converter can unlock for a short time then lockup again. This is a normal function of throttle position, speed and timing.
The reason is if you needed to panic brake, the converter unlocking keeps the motor from adding to the stopping/slowing distance by unlocking and letting the converter slip from normal fluid shear.
Not many owners know this feature is there. It's been a part of the auto trans shifting since back in 1984 even with the little Broncos and Rangers.
If a truck has a tach and you test this, it can be seen on the tach with a change in RPM with thrrottle then lockup comes on then RPM is no longer sensitive to throttle except with slowly increasing rpm with road speed.
May or may not be what your seeing.
Also be awhere the trans will not go into OD from a cold start until the Trans fluid temps come up to about 100 degrees +/-.
Good luck.
