I recently installed a 429. Everything is new except the wiring. I am using a HEI coil-over distributor with the red/green wire plugged into it. I have the solenoid wired but I don't know if its right. I had to re-install the dash and there are some loose connections: 2 L shaped female grey connectors, and a green/black with a male un-connected on it. I have the ignition control module hooked up and plugged in. I think the horn power comes from it too. The dash lights work, headlights don't, park lights don't. Turn the ignition and no sound except the single click. Help if you can.
I assume the RED with GREEN stripe wire is what went to your original coil. You will want to double check, but I believe the HEI setup takes a straight 12-volt keyed source which is NOT what goes to the coil - the coil is fed straight 12 volts during START but fed through a ballast resistor when in RUN with the original Ford Duraspark setup. You will not get the correct voltage to the HEI setup with the key in RUN using this method and the truck will not run.
HEI has its own ignition module self-contained in the distributor, therefore the original Ford ignition module on the inner fender must go away.
Starter solenoid: positive battery cable to the large stud closest to the battery, starter to the large stud on the opposite side. RED with BLUE stripe hot-in-START wire from the cab to the small 'S' post. There are two heavy-gauge wires with ring terminals (one from the alternator, one to the cab), these share the large stud that goes to the battery.
Please post pictures of the connectors in question. Please explain how you wired the headlights (you need to provide more information besides simply stating that they don't work).
I wiggled the shifter and I ended up getting power to the starter but it still doesn't crank over. I know I need to ground to the motor to the frame still, but it doesn't sound like the starter is engaging the bendix. Do I need a jumper wire from the I to the S on the starter? Here are some pics in my album. One shows the solenoid, scroll back one and it shows the ignition module, scroll back one more and it shows the wires I was talking about under the dash.
So I put a jumper wire from the positive to the start on the starter and it turns over now. I will post more when I get the fuel primed and see if I need to find a different 12 volt for the distributor. I'm sure I do, but which wire do I get it from if I do? There aint much for fuses in the panel. which one do I piggyback from?
