I did some work for a guy who owns a local tow yard today. I dropped off a rebuilt 3rd member and saw he had a F350 sitting in the yard covered in dust.
Its a 1995 DRW CC LB 7.3L 5spd 2wd. Truck has 160K on it. Problem is that its not starting. Its his personal truck, but he doesn't know what is wrong with it.
Last time he used it was to tow a 38ft 5th wheel in Wyoming. He got back, parked it, and he said four days later it wouldn't start. He thought it was a bent valve due to the fact that it spits a little air through the intake when you crank it. I heard it today as well. There are no other sounds though when cranking. It sounds normal.
I just can't see a bad valve occurring all of a sudden though. So, I'm hoping its a bad sensor and an easy fix. The Tach moves which will likely rules out a bad CPS. So, what other things would one check.
I can get this truck for dirt cheap as is. Like $1500 as it sits. I just don't want to buy it and then have to tear down the heads and stuff.
Any ideas as to something besides a bent valve? It doesn't even stumble trying to start which is why I think its a sensor or something else.
Did the wait to start light come on? And can you take the idm out and shake it to make sure it doesnt have water in it?
I haven't screwed with anything knowing that if I fix it, he'll want more $$$ for it. lol
But, the wait to start light does come on though. So, I don't think its the #22 (IIRC) fuse.
The truck itself is in decent shape. Not great, but not terrible either. It looks like a farm truck that needs a decent paint job. Interior isn't torn up, just a little soiled, but cleanable.
A bent valve wouldn't keep it from starting. You're on the right track in thinking that it is likely something electrical that is wrong with it. IDM, CPS, IPR, ICP or something simple. For $1500 you can't go wrong.

Glow plugs going bad, all it takes is one being out and if it has been sitting it can be hard starting or not starting or the glow plug time might not be any going, i've one them go all of a sudden too. I have been starting mine on ether for quite a few years, because of the above issues. I got tired of changing a glow plugs every year. It has almost1/2 a million on it now.
Get the procedure for checking the resistance of the glow plugs. The procedure covers checking the glow plug timer too.
If you try what I am doing turn the key on let the glow plug cycle out (takes about 2minutes) give a small squirt (and I do mean small) ether then try to start it.
I just put my second CPS in mine a few weeks ago and the original was changed in 1998 just after I bought it, Get the Ford version if it is what is wrong with it. The upgraded version is better. Typically if it is that it can be an intermittent problem and will start eventually and run for awhile.
Buy it you'll spent way more time in it, then under it!!!
