I'm currently running 33x12.50x16.5 tires mounted on 16.5x10" rims on my '84 F-250. I bought those tires years ago and they have served me well, but they are getting worn and I'm also concerned about safety given their age. Problem is, 16.5" tires are obsolete and very difficult to find. Even if you can find them the selection is very limited...I only know of BF Goodrich and Super Swamper who still make them. I like the look of those 33's on 10" rims so I'd like to stick with something similar in size but on a more common 16" rim. So...I'm thinking of switching to 16x10" rims with either 285/75 or 305/70 tires which should be much more common and easier to find. My concern is will a wider 16" rim clear the brake calipers and steering knuckles? I faintly remember years ago I tried to install aftermarket 16" rims on a customer's truck and ran into clearance issues in that area. Is anyone running 16x10" rims on their F-250?
can't say i have, but i suspect it depends on the backspacing of the rims.
to start with, crawl under your truck with your current wheels on there and check out clearances, if all points would be comfortable with the wheel 1/4" closer to the brakes and steering components, then a 16" of your same backspacing should have no problem fitting on there.
you know what has offroad tires on 16.5in rims that is still made today? humvees. go to your nearest military post, ask where drmo is, and they'll sell you some 37s for cheap. but seeing as you want to retain the ~33 size wheels, that doesn't really help you out haha :P
