Have any of you figured out an upgrade for the power steering pump? I am tried or the arm strong steering in parking lots and while stopped.
I have a 2004 Excursion with 35x12.50 tires so yes there is a little bit of added stress to the steering system but not enough to warrant the steering I currently have.
I had heard a rumor that the 2005/2006 and up pump was an upgrade but have not checked part numbers yet. Did a search on here as well and didn't find much.
I know about AGR and PSC but am trying to stay a little cheaper than them but if that is not possible I will go that route. Used AGR in the past on other rigs running big tires and have been very happy with the performance and never heard a bad word about PSC either.
Just fyi.....i was running D rated 37's bfg km2's mud terrains and i could never turn the wheels while stationary. I figured well it must be the pump is weak and lived with it. I recently upgraded to E rated 37's toyo mudders since i tow a fifth wheel. To my surprise, I can now turn my wheel ALOT easier with these with the truck at a complete stop. Not sure if the softer compound with the bfg's was the issue but my wife who used to complain when driving my truck now has no issues either.....what tires are you running
Yeah brother....not to sure on this one. It might be pointing to a p/s issue. Have you flushed the system and replaced it with new fluid....see if that helps

I thought about doing that but didn't feel like wasting the fluid and my time. It has been like this since I bought it 50,000 miles ago and one set of tires ago. Figured someone had found a better pump for them by now and I would just go that route. I have been around Ford trucks and cars my entire life and their power steering pumps have always been junk. On my previous Ford I have replaced their pumps with Saginaw or aftermarket Saginaw pumps and been very happy with the results. No more noises and the ability to turn the tires with one finger on the steering wheel while stationary regardless of tire size.
Your better off not doing any dry steering if you can.
It also chews up you tires even if it is easy. And your
ball joints, rod ends and what not will last longer.
Less stress if you roll a little bit.
This is for all size of tires
Drain and flush the fluid. Makes a huge difference. I used 1qt Lucas transmission fluid and 1qt mercon this seemed to thicken up the fluid and helped. I may eventually replace it though...
