how do electric trailer brakes work?

do they use magnets?

how do electric trailer brakes work?

They use an electromagnet to drag on the drum, which pushes the brake shoes out. More current thru the magnet = more drag = more braking force.

To expand on the topic, the controller in the truck senses when you press the brake pedal and either by inertia or a time delay, sends current to the trailer brakes. Inertia controllers add more current based on how hard you are trying to stop, i.e. if the nose of the truck dives, they send more current. Time delay controllers add more current the longer you hold the pedal down. Most inertia controllers must be leveled when they are installed and some have a pendulum which will react to hills. The newer controllers are solid state and work much better. Time delay controllers don't work too well for panic stops, for obvious reasons.
