I have read that simply swapping out the stock downpipe with a 3.5" one will make a significant difference in EGTs and some modest performance gains. My question is will this type of swap hook up with the stock exhaust with the use of an adaptor?
My truck has relatively new exhaust from the previous owner. I am happy with the sound with just the cat and no muffler. I understand that replacing the whole system would be preferred. However I do pull a dump trailer from time to time and am subject to DOT inspections, so I do not want to risk removing the CAT.
If it is simply a matter of a $100 investment and a couple hours of my time I think I will give it a try. If it is going to be more complicated and involved I might just wait.
If you are not getting rid of the cat I see no significant benefit. And after I went with straight piped exhaust and just recently went 4" all the way the egt's still hit the same highs, but they drop a lot quicker after getting off

Yes, and you shouldnt need an adapter. My 3.5 mbrp down pipe came in a full exhaust system that retained the factory cat (4 inch after cat). The down pipe was two pieces, the lower of which was all ready set up to bolt straight to the cat.
The down pipe should be available separately from mbrp and probably most other exhaust companies.
