Ok, so got all the parts I needed to do this oil cooler replacement and I'm ready to start today. However, I realized that I forgot to buy a new oil filter. None of my local parts stores can order in motorcraft filters. My parts store I use most carries the Wix filters. Don't know what NAPA carries. I've read a lot about not using anything but motorcraft. I need the truck this weekend so I can't wait on Tousley to ship me one at this point (wouldn't get to me till Monday) and my closest Ford dealer is 90 minutes away and I have no excuse to take a company vehicle to that town to get one. What are my options?
With that said, It is up to you my friend. You know as well as I do millions of people use a NON RACOR/FORD filter everyday with no issues. Hell, I used a NON RACOR many times before I realized the importance the the dimensions of the filter plays in the system. IF YOU ABSOLUTELY NEED THE TRUCK AND HAVE NO OTHER OPTIONS AND CANNOT GET AN OEM FILTER use a different filter until you get the right one then pop the new one in.
People will probably crucify me but in all seriousness, how many people have used a NON RACOR filter and had "0" issues?
My oil is only at 3500 miles... I just assume it has to be drained so may as well be changed. Can I just use my old filter for a couple days then change it.out? Should I put the old oil in if I do that or run new oil through the old filter?
That is an option, not over the change intervals. Just be very careful!!! Keep it clean. Then stop at first place to get a new one, and change it on the street. (filter that is)
do you heave a truck parts store near by we use nothing but luberfiner 2017 filters or donoldson filters on our fleet all our 6.os have between 200 to 300 k miles and no engine / oil related failures

donaldson makes the air filters for the 6.0. Not the oil or fuel filters. That's Racor.
I order all of my oil & air filters from Diesel Filters Online. Better service and prices than my local Ford Dealership.
If you willing to gamble the cost of a new engine go ahead and run an aftermarket filter. If it's not worth the gamble then stick with OEM (Motorcraft or Racor)
If the old filter/cap is the correct one I would unscrew it, let it drain, and bag it. After repairs and servicing it up with new oil, I'd swap the filter ASAP.
Getting ahold of a Fram element (if you have the right cap) would be a better choice but be aware they may have changed the design. If the Fram comes with a plastic adapter piece in the box, skip it and use the old filter.
