So I am guessing this is a black one then?

Seems I have a hard time telling the difference between what folks call the "black" one and the one they call "dark gray", although the gray one usually has a purple o-ring doesn't it? This one is a part number F7TZ-12K073-A.

Ya, both my dark gray ones (one ford, one IH) have the purple oring. I'm saying that's the black one.

TPS didn't fix the issue. It hiccuped again today on the way home from work. Guess I will be ordering a new CPS pretty soon. I have a spare, but it is used and I don't recall what color it is. If it is a black one I may run it, otherwise I think I will be getting one new and putting it in.

My truck did exactly the same thing. Battled with it for about a year. Seemed to be more of a nusance than anything. Finally got tired of throwing money and parts at it. Took it to Ford. $400 later and it WAS the CPS. From now on, I only get the CPS through Ford. I had already replaced it twice.

Bad CPS in April of this year. With mine, I would be driving down the road and it would suddenly seem like a massive power loss and I was running on 4 cylinders for just a very few seconds then everything was fine. By the time I reached over and shut the radio off so I could better hear what was happening, it was back to running smooth and normal. There was never any static or abnormal radio sounds when mine was acting up and eventually went to complete failure.
At first it was about 2 wks apart, 2 or 3 times, then nothing for about a month. Then it happened again. Seems like it was just a couple of days after that last hiccup that it died when I was pulling away from a stop sign. No hiccup, no indication, just died as if I had turned the key off. Was not able to restart. Ended up having to get a tow.

Replaced with Ford Part# F4TZ-12K073-C. $42.48 from Ford stealership.

Got about 6K on mine now including a couple of hard pulls up the Cascade Mtns, quite a bit of running 5000+ feet above home elevation and no problems.................

INTERESTING thread. I get asked all the time about the cps.
It's amazing what a new, good cps will straighten out in a truck.

F7TZ-12K073-A crosses to F7TZ-12K073-B, $16.50 from Tousley, list is $25.
This is also the one crossed to in my Alliant Power book, which is light gray and has a black o-ring.

F4TZ-12K073-C from Tousley is $19.80, list is $30.

Could the -C be a better sensor? Costs more so it might be better?
The gray are junk hit-miss across the board. It'd be great to have a reliable part number to refer to a good product...

Steve, which part number did you use?

Here is some pics of one I bought about six years ago from the stealership and put it in my glove box, never needed it so far shouldn't have said that. It looks like a light gray to me and the o ring looks dark blue.

Just an update, I swapped out my CPS about a week ago for one of the latest models offered (had the International number 1825899C93 on it) and so far I have had no more issues with the funny RPM flutter. I had a couple times just prior to swapping this one in that I had a serious lope on startup as well. Granted it was in the low 30s and the truck wasn't plugged in, but that was a new issue. Seems to be running better with this new CPS too.

Well I've had my sensor for a couple weeks now. Last week driving in the rain the truck started to buck again. I almost flipped a lid, hasn't done it since though. Again this is the dark grey with purple o-ring. Every once and awhile at idol the truck will have a off idol. I might send it back for a replacement. I
Don't exactly see consistent mileage now though, either it's the sensor
Or we happened to get winter fuel already. Which I always drop like 3mpg
