As I motor through the west, monitoring gauges is my new past time. A couple of weeks ago, from northern Colorado to Yellowstone NP, this is what was showing. Curious what your thoughts are?
Fairly flat, 70 mph, 50* out, trans at 180??(seems high), egt's @900, 8lbs boost. Keep in mind 12k 5th chasing me (can't seem to loose it).
I do have a slight exhaust leak at one manifold, but mostly concerned with the tranny temps. I think Mark K. says 80* over ambient? I realize I am not close to dangerous highs, but also saw 160-180 yesterday, with temps outside in the 25-35 range. These were in the mountains (Togwotee Pass out of Tetons), lots of downshifting and climbing, but thinking Tru-cool not doing well enough?
I wouldn't worry about trans until it gets over 200* - but even that is not 'danger zone', just an indication ya may want more cooling.
EGT's can sit at a sustained 1250* all day long, no worries about kissing 1400* or even higher when climbing a grade - although I just take my foot out of it when it gets up to 1250*, because I'm just like that. Fortunately, I got better tunes and this is no longer a problem. Now I can hammer it up the mountain and pass them Dodges and Duramaxes without ever getting EGT's into the red. I was relegated to 'stock' when towing at altitude (through those same mountains!)
when I had F5 tooning...
I hope you're gonna share some pictures of your trip!!!!!!!!!!!!
From my bleek understanding thus far 180 is not a concern. I have the Scan Gauge II with the trans temp daily driving in flat Houston not towing anything showing at around 180. I believe that to be the "average". And Mark did say that these trannies will run forever at 200, that's not overheating.
I think your trans temps are doing quite well....those Teton mountains are serious stuff. Hope you are having a great trip. We are thinking of heading to Yellowstone next summer ourselves.
i've started digging into my transmission on here and just reading your initial post where the temp was indicating 180* didn't alarm me. enjoy the views out your window in the mean time. safe travels!

Thanks. I am thinking hard about different tunes, not completely thrilled. At one point coming over an icy patch it decided to hang the shift a little late and slammed into gear. Who needs coffee when the rear end gets a little sideways at 50mph . Having egt issues also.
I will try to get pics downloaded.

I highly recommend the trip, but try for May or Sept. if schedule allows. Great time of year and crowds aren't as bad.
Thanks for all the comments. I made a good decision last summer with the tru-cool, all things considered at the time. I am a little worried if trucking across warmer climates what might happen. I am a little better situated now, maybe time for the 6.0 upgrade when we get back to Texas. I am always slightly concerned of a rock taking out the tru-cool, since it sits right up front.
Aww man, you're killing me!!!!! All my favorite places... We LOVE Great Sand Dunes Nat'l Park. Be sure to hike up to Zapata Falls. The San Luis Valley is the highest, widest 'valley' in the world IIRC starting at nearly 10k feet and running like 120mi with 14k ft peaks along the sides.
BTS uses rubber hose to hook up 6.0 cooler. If its good enough for him, its good enough for me! 210* won't hurt anything, but much hotter and ya might consider a fluid change when ya get home. And good tuning NEVER slams into gear... How I don't miss that nonsense. Some tooners like to jack with line pressure and shift points - bad idea!! With my current tunes, I can hammer on it in 60tow in the Excursion at 22k lbs GCVW and never see above 1100* EGT.
Dunno which way you're headed, but if ya go near Las Vegas, NM - I strongly recommend visiting Montezuma Hot Springs. These FREE springs are right off the road and have pools as hot as 110* ('The Lobster Pot'). Nothing like a good soak on a road trip..........
I would ditch the stock cooler and tru cool and get a 6.0 trans cooler installed.
It's a drop in, bolt on mod that doesn't require any additional plumbing other than reducing the line size. I spent one of the hottest summers in San Antonio and my trans never complained between the 100 degree plus heat and the good size hills they have.
Even while pulling a heavy car trailer weighing in at 11K total (one enclosed and one an auto transport) the trans never broke a sweat and was reasonably cool pulling from Spring through The Woodlands, Conroe, and on up to almost Huntsville where we all know some good size hills are.
Thanks Razzi. It will get a 6.0 soon, hit 250 taking a short cut, thank god my wife picked the route. She about died when I told her she almost made a 4,000 dollar mistake. Shouldn't be a problem getting the okay.
What can I say Jason, has been a good trip coming from Yellowstone through Colorado, hope it's okay if we hit Carlsbad Caverns also. We looked at the falls, but didn't feel up to the drive, wife's Honda Fit. Dunes were way cool, we cruised about 3/4 way up before deciding to turn around. Amazing place.
Jason I'm on my phone so I can't see ur sig. But you have an upgraded Turbo right? That makes a big difference on egts. I have good tunes from one of your favorite tuners and I can hit 1500* + on a wot run with my stock Turbo.

My F350 has a 38R and AC codes - but X has stock injectors and has had stock charger and van turbo with same tunes. EGT's were a little lower with the van turbo, but I never saw 1500* with either turbo...

Jason, what has your experience been with the AC code injectors? Does this include #8 cyl.? I am pondering replacing them in the next few months, following another thread concerning noise plus mine have 211k on them. I am not looking for massive power, but reliable upgrades are always good. Can't beat Clay's prices either.
