intake kits?

What are your opinions on the modified intakes available out there?

like the K+N FIPK or others?

Are they snake oil?

The guys on RPS think they are a essential for a ranger, but I don't think that the senority is present on that site as it is here....

Thinking about posibly puting one on my 00 4.0L ranger.

any replies would be appreciated.

I'm on the fence. Since my 3.0 uses the same air intake as a 4.0 I don't think I have an air problem, plus I have never detected a vacuum upstream of the trottle body.

I'm on the fence as well.

I was watching HP TV on TNN this past saturday, they put on a cusotm intake on a bone stock 99'ish mustang and then dynoed it. Supposedly there was a 10-15 Hp gain at WOT over the stock dyno. I think that they also stuck on a BBK throttle body as well.

I've seen mixed reviews on the net, one extreme to the other.

I dunno if you guys frequent RPS much, but I'm starting to think that they have a site loaded with inexperinced posters that are just spouting manufacturer claims, and no real factual data (yeah i know that it happens here as well, but not as bad).

Thanks for the replys guys!

One happy FTE poster....

I also installed a air kit from streetsmart design. Its for the 96 and later I have a 94, still pretty much a drop in didn't have to make any special adapters or anything. Does add some power, is noisier when accellerating hard, but other than that you dont know its there till ya pop the hood.

I also added a free flow exhaust just prior to the air kit. The 2 of them did make a noticable difference.

2.5 inch pipe from header to end, free flow cat, magna flow muffler and the guy kept all bends to a minimum. Milage maybe came up a little but I constantly get 19-20 mpg highway around 70-75 avg speed. 94 4.0, man trans, even now that I dont have the OD I still get the same milage as with the OD.

Personally I think it is snake oil for the newer rangers. If you look at the newer rangers and how the intake runs you already have a cool air intake. The filter is located in the grill sucking in cold air. If you look inside the intake tube there is no restrictions once you remove the little hole thing in the airfilter housing.

I read an article that you can get more HP by wrapping your stock intake with thermal reflective tape and install a drop in K&N or other type of oiled air filter.

One bad thing about those K&N airfilters they don't filter as well as a paper and let more dirt in the engine.
