So I had my vehicle inspected today and the e-brake didn't pass. The pedal is EXTREMELY hard to press down. I can only get it down about an 1.5" with steel toes on. I have had e-brake cables seize before and it made the brake stick on. I thought I saw something about the pedal assembly wearing out, but that seemed odd.Can anyone provide some advice?
I did a brief search, but I am pressed for time. Heading outta town tomorrow and have to get the brake fixed as soon as I get back. Thanks!
cable is probably seized inside the jacket - try spraying some Pb blaster at each end of the cable and let it soak in then try the petal again. Be careful how hard you push on the petal you'd be surprised how easy it is to snap one of the cables. In rare cases the petal assembly goes bad or the actual parking brake seizes up but that's usually the exception.
If it frees up switch to WD40 and apply and release the brake - spraying WD40 on the exposed cable when the e-brake is on.
This is the #1 reason why I apply my parking brake at least 1/month on all of are vehicles even if i don't need to use it.

Reason: oops
So I unseized the cable and took it back. They wanted to replace the e-brake pedal assembly, all 4 brake cables, and the high mount brake light because the sockets were melted. All for $970!
I got a new pedal assembly from my buddy for $20, all e-brake cables minus the wheelbase length one since it can't sieze, and put one of my Ranger third brake lights on.
This took me about 6 hours and cost me ~$80... I learned that the front cables was not seized and the only problem with the pedal assembly was the pad was bent down a little. And it is on the other two pedals I looked at. So the total shoudl really be around $45 for the repairs. I also had to wind out the adjusters on the brake shoes. Waiting now to see if she will pass...
