is it better to spray on a rustolem then an undercoating? or maybe the rustolem after the undercoating? i want to seal up my cab underside and frame to prevent salt eating away my truck.
Got it $38/gal at local hardware store. Just bought new gallon to redo it over last weekend. Usually get a few years out of can.
It's kinda soupy, I cut it with used motor oil. Been putting it on for three years now and even in rustbelt Ohio the underside of my clean southern truck is rustfree(oily, gritty but rust free).
I removed door panels and slopped it in there, inside front hood edges, inside tailgate panel, inside front fenders(from engine compartment). I spray entire frame and all around bottom of bed, underside of cab, inside rocker panels. It drips out for a few days, but then it's fine.
I agree, undercoating is the worse thing. It just traps moisture and rots it out from inside. I've see it plenty of times.
Rustoleum has worked quite nicely on my truck for 21 years now. Recoat every few years. Dad painted my truck right after he bought it new and I dare you to find any rust now.
But the better answer regarding salt is: avoid it like the plague and hit the carwash for a thorough washing underneath as soon as it's gone!
I POR 15'd the underside a couple of years ago, it has worked well. There is a lot of info on line about this product so I will not repeat it here. Recently I have taken to just rubbing anything that looks a little rusty with grease from my gun while I am under there hitting up the grease fittings. Old school method is to use the 6 qts of waste oil from your oil change in a 3-1 mixture with kerosine , put it in a graden sprayer and coat the bottom. Then drive down a dusty road. Kind of messy but it works pretty well and it's cheap.
I second Por-15. Then again I hardly drive my truck in unfavorable conditions. Did it back in 08, still looks new. Has worked great on my 88 which was a plow truck.
