Ground wires DO NOT need to be the size of a tree trunk to properly ground the aircraft when on the ground. We only use two ground wires, each one about a 1/4 inch in diameter. When they do get struck, the ground wires get burnt, the HF antenna's, (The long wire antenna above the plane,about 50 feet long, two wires running parallel about 6 feet apart) and normally that is about all.
As far as being in the air we use small 6 in wires, again about a 1/4 inch in diameter to dissipate the static electricity caused by movement through the air.we have about 12 of these wires, they are all pointed to help dissipate electricity.
And no, lightning does not make a sound, and thunder is not caused by clouds hitting each other in air (I know other guys 20+ years who believe this) It is caused by the superheating of air and the subsequent pressure increase caused by this.
