Hi all from the UK, I have been in the historic military vehicle world for over 15 years, had several trucks and jeeps, restored a few too and have got the point now that I need to fit a diesel engine in my current truck so I have got hold of a Cummins 5.9Ltr 150HP 6BT engine and a ZF S 5-42 gearbox out of a 20,000 Lb tipper truck.
I need some help with the gearbox stick shifter and housing for it. This has a remote gear selector as the truck was a C.O.E. so gearbox was behind the cab. I have seen these gearboxes with a stick shift coming straight out of the top of the box, which is what I need but my gearbox case is different although the 6 bolt fixing for the gear selector looks the same. What I need is someone to crawl under their truck and get the 10 digit model number off the truck gearbox which has a stick shift so I can cross reference the part numbers to see if the stick shift will fit my box.
Yep, thanks for the link I think that will help. Do all the F250 and F350 have the 5-42 gearboxes ? and do they all have the stick shift leaver going straight down into the top of the box ?
There are a couple different versions based on engine, but other than the light duty F250 they should all use the S5-42. All the shifters are top mounted.

Thanks for that, the link in the above post gives a list of gearbox model numbers compared to the type of engine fitted, but all I need to know is the model number for a gearbox which has a top mounted shifter, so with this information I should be able to find out if these parts will fit my box.
Just thought do the 4x4 trucks which have the 5-42 box have a separate transfer box or is it part of the back end of the main gearbox ?
The main part of the transmission is the same between 4x2 and 4x4 versions. There is provision on the rear case cover to mount an external transfer case on 4x4 models.
