First, great site. Do more reading than asking cause most of my questions about rebuilding my sons 69 f-100 have already been answered. I have a 3 speed column shift, it shifts great. I just don't like how it wont dis-engage until it is nearly all the way out. Everyone talks about 1 to 1 1/2 of free play at clutch but nothing about when letting out the clutch where it should be when it disengages and truck starts to move.
If you have the 1 to 1 1/2" freeplay at the top and the clutch doesn't engage until near the top the disc is worn out or the pressure plate and/or flywheel is bad.
Do you have a friend who is a mechanic or and older guy who drove a lot of sticks that could tell you if the clutch is going? One way to cheat is to park on a steep hill {DO NOT GET OUT OF THE TRUCK} in 1st gear and see if the clutch holds or go up a steep hill and listen if the engine revs because the clutch is slipping. If either or both of these things occur you need a new clutch.
Ok. So pull up midway on athe hill ora steep slope with truck running and stop. Then slowly let clutch out till it starts to engage and listen for abnormal engine rev?
A clutch will start to slip first going up a hill in high gear when under load (lugging the engine). That just means it's starting to go. If this is the case you will only notice that it takes more pressure on the gas pedal to make the truck move. If the engine revs a lot stop before you need to get towed because you blew the clutch. Make sure you do this on a hill that you can coast down in reverse and turn around.
Ok. Yeah the truck does not slip, i have driven the truck several times and it shifts and drives great. No revving or unatural behavior from the clutch. Havent drove it much at higher speeds or in third gear much.
If you do the test I gave you and it's OK I wouln't worry about it as long as you have the freeplay set right. Sometimes just the springs in the pressure plate are weak ang it takes more travel for the clutch to engage.
You're welcome. I didn't see there was a spell checker on here. I'm used to not having one on these reply boxes. I went to use it and it requires it to be downloaded. SOS. That is not a cry for help.
