I just got a 76 F250 Trailer Special with a 460. Wondering if I need to put a lead additive, or when did Ford switch to unleaded gas? My gauge on my dash does not say unleaded fuel only, any help would be much appreciated. Thanks!
Around '71 or '72 unleaded fuel was phased out. You're safe with a '76.The D3VE heads already had hardened seats and the compression ratio was horribly low.Unleaded fuel is what killed the muscle car war, well one of the reasons anyway.
I don't recall the exact year but I'm pretty sure it was later than that.
From Wikipedia:
standards to phase out leaded gasoline were first implemented in 1973 — due in great part to studies conducted by Philip J. Landrigan. In 1995, leaded fuel accounted for only 0.6% of total gasoline sales and less than 2000 short tons (1814 t) of lead per year. From 1 January 1996, the Clean Air Act banned the sale of leaded fuel for use in on-road vehicles.
You're right Fmc400(and Devino246),in that the leaded fuel phase out occured later than when I said. The auto manufacturers knew what was coming and began the changes(lowering compression ratios, retarded timing,etc...)to prepare for unleaded fuel.1970 was the last year for high compression engines and horsepower dropped in 1971.I also just read a post at 460ford by Scotty at RHP that not all D3VE heads had hardened seats until later in the '70's.Being a '76 460,the OPs engine should be ok to run unleaded as previously mentionned.
