1966 Lighter Light?

I have noticed over the past that my 66 Coustom Cab has a small glow off the drivers side kick panel like there is a bulb out of the socket behind the instrument panel while having lights on at night.I don't have any sockets out and it appears to be the lighter well that has the light glare.I assume the lighter well has a light so you can find it at night to put the lighter back in?Can someone explain this one for me? Thanks,Russ

Russ, I could be wrong, my std cab does not have a socket for the lighter. Since you have the CC might try the instrument panel dimmer switch to see if it effects the bulb; if it does not then wonder if it could be the hi/low headlight indicator bulb.

There is a light for the lighter but its a metal socket that attaches to the backside of the lighter. But I do have an extra socket that I don't know we're it goes to on my 65 f250 CS it's the same type of socket that fits in the ic. I've looked and can't figure were it goes,

What are you referring to? OP said something to the effect that his lighter may have a socket and bulb. There is no such thing.

The lighter socket has a threaded stud. The barrel shaped lighter fuse (FEW-14429-A) threads onto it, then the feed wire attaches to the stud on the lighter fuse.

Ford offered a dealer installed accessory courtesy lamp. Mounted under the center of the dash, was controlled by a toggle switch, was first offered in 1960 for Ford station wagons.

Ford offered another type of dealer installed courtesy lamps. There were two, mounted under the dash on either end. Were controlled by R/L courtesy lamp switches that mounted into the A pillar.

When the doors were opened, the lights came on. How many members of this forum have either? How many members of this forum have ever heard of or seen either?

How many members of this forum have a 1965 or 1966 accessory brochure?

C2RZ-15072-A .. Cigarette Lite-Lighter "Push the switch one way, it's a lighter ... push the switch the other way, it's a map light." "A welcome accessory while traveling." All models: $7.95 (price in 1965).

Dunno how much good a map light will do since the lighter is mounted to the left of the steering column. One has to reach their mitt around the steering wheel to access the lighter.

Mine has the courtesy lamps - one on each side that come on when the doors are opened. My cigar lighter also has the fuse screwed on the back. Strange looking little thing. I'm assuming that its a reset type fuse...?

The factory installed fuses (first offered in 1956) have a hole you can stick a paper clip in and reset it. The service part replacements do not.
Five or so years ago, a member was looking for the lighter fuse, usual chimer-inners told member to look in the fuse box or look for an in-line fuse.

I said it's FEW-14429-A is barrel shaped, has a male & female end. The female end threads onto the back of the lighter socket stud, the feed wire attaches to its male end.

It took several more posts back/forth before the member finally figured it out.

Here is my set up, the metal socket with the bulb attaches to the outside of the lighter well in the 2 slots. The wire comes from the wiring harness and is not spliced in. The last picture is the extra socket I have and for the life of me can't figure out were it goes. The IC lights up evenlly and all the idiot lights light up to.

I've seen those lights on other cars before but never on the 65-66s. Maybe it was added...? Wonder what vehicles they might have come off of... They must be kind of standard size I'm guessing. Course guessing will just get ya introuble - unless ya had a shot of brandy first. Than it just becomes general bulls??t.
Bill, as for that little fuse on the back of the lighter, do other cars and trucks have the same type reset fuse and on what yrs... Sorry, thats a lot to look up, thought ya might know off the top.

Mark, if that thing is just hanging up there w/out a bulb in it, I might suggest sticking a burned out one in there so it don't by accident short out while your driving down the road at night and loose ALL your dash lights or more...

That's the cigarette lighter well light...unscrew the 2 halves and see how it all goes together...the bulb hood pinches a bit and drops into slots in the lighter well...
Its standard issue in all of the trucks Ive ever seen.
