Hello. I have a 2000 model F250 with v-10/auto-4X4 supercab truck.
I want to buy something to eliminate the speed limiter and something to get rid of my transmission problem. my problem is: at the very sight of an anthill, the trans drops out of overdrive and sometimes another gear(maybe converter unlocking) the moter shoots to 4grand and stays there until i'm halfway down the otherside of the hill. This all happens with no additional pressing on the gas on my part. "Problem" is much worse if I use cruise control-don't use anymore. This also happens when there is a moderate wind.
Back to the computer chip: I don't want a chip that I have to use anything except 87 or 89 octane
superchip micro tuner. removes speed limiter, adjust shift firmness, shift points. i would recommend the superchip tune though, this allows your engine to make more power thus helping it from downshifting as much. premium fuel only. But you can do the trans and speed limiter and not install the tuning to the engine.Getting a chip that runs on regular does not do much.PLUS the micro tuner is a scanner than can diagnose and clear any codes.I like mine an you can buy it here at the online store.
I also used the superchip programmer and love everything about it you even get used to the premium fuel I dont know really how fast she'll go but faster than I want to go in a 4x4 with 305's I have though had the needle straight down if that tells you anything and the shifts are firm and impressive and the shift down on overpasses and pulling trailers does not seem to happen as often
Are you running a different size tire than what the computer was set for at the factory? If so, I would have a dealer adjust that first. It's usually cheap and helped my situation a lot. I went from 235' to 285's and the truck was a dog, doing exactly what you've decribed. The dealer set my revs per mile in the computer to match my tire size and it was like getting a whole new truck. If you still want to remove the speed limiter and change shift points after that, you'll have to go with a chip or tuner.
I had the same problem with my 92 and 94 F-150's with little ole 302's. I think that it's the OD tranny and the way it's set up. You would think that the higher RPM'stranny kicking out of OD) are to compensate for lack of torque/HP from a smaller engine. With a V10 this shouldn't be the case. My buddies 351 van does it and his dad's V10 motorhome does it too. This might be why the torque band for the ford so much different than the GM's. The GM's have a very flat torque band and as a result you don't have the extreme reving. My buddy(GM guy) was with me when my V10 dropped out of OD and he commented on it not having enough power. This is a common misconception, it has the power but simply accesses it differently than a GM or Dodge. That's my 2 cents anyways
Second, what rear end? Are you trying to turn larger than 31" tires?
Are the REV Per Mile RPM of the tires properly entered into the PCM? (Is the speedo accurate)
ON level ground, in OD, with TQ locked, what rpm do you usually have at 70mph?
Have you ever re-trained you PCM ( do the 2000 V10 PCM have the same adaptive learning as the 01s???)
Has the trans ever been serviced? Has the Fluid ever seen ANY temp higher than 230F (scorched, oxidised Mercon behaves differently than good clean stuff).
Not sure why you want to push a misbehaving tranny past 95mph but that is your bussiness, and it does require chip or microtuner. Don't misread this I am all for busting 95mph
Just not with a $5000 trans that don't seem right.
My tire size has not increased in height from stock and only marginaly increased in width: 265/75/r16 (stock was slightly narrower-wasn't much.
On level ground straight stretch, the rpm's are 1800-2000.
Never reprogrammed pcm
The trans has never been serviced, I have 69000 miles on truck, it does not have trans temp gauge, but does have remote trans cooler.
The trans has been this way since new so I assumed this is normal. One friend bought the same truck as mine except 2003 model with a 4.70??-i think-rear gear and his doesn't seem to do this as much.
The only hauling I do is a 12 ft trailer with zero turn mower, or an 18 ft trailer holding up to 5 atv's.
There's something boring about driving spd limit. I take off from a stop slowly, not gunning it. When I get it up to 95, it is usually very gradually-got some nice longgggggg straight, level, smooth stretches on my drive to work, or going down long downhills
Anyway thanks to everyone who has replied
Have a fantastic weekend
I've read several posts from others regarding symptoms just like yours (various threads scattered all over the place). They linked them to the new larger tires they had just installed. After a trip to the shop or using a micro chip tuner and reflashing the computer, their problems went away. While you indicate your tire diameter hasn't changed, it's possible the wrong diameter was entered at the factory. I had a friend with an F150 with this exact problem. He determined that his speedo was off about 5 mph at 60 by using a GPS unit. Took it to the dealer, computer reflashed with correct tire diameter (revs per mile), and speedo corrected. You might check the accuracy of your speedo with the aid of someone's hand held GPS to see if it's accurate. If not, then this is your problem and you should get your computer reflashed. By the way, I have a 2000 V10, SC, 4X2, auto, 3.73 gears and have never had this type of shifting/hunting problem. This leads me to believe further that it very well could be the computer programming. Good luck on diagnosing the problem. Let us know what you find and if you're able to get it fixed.
69,000 on the original fluid?? *yikes* It should have been changed twice!! Remember the V10 makes power in theupper RPM ranges. It has to shift out of OD to get there. 4.30 gears would help somewhat but it will still downshift.
