sometimes the old filter gasket gets stuck in the housing and has to be pried out with a screwdriver. Or there is dirt in there. I am not sure if you have a spin on filter like a Napa 1515 or if it is a canister type. I am assuming it is a spin on type. So please tell me what you have for sure. I don't recognize the numbers you are using so I am prolly wrong and it is a canister type. If so than again the old gasket may still be stuck in there and it won't seal properly.
Also my 2 cents on the Fram filter is that they are not a very good one.
truck had a napa 1773 spin on, but it is too small, just don't look right. so i scoured my parts catalog and i believe i need a d9az 6731[ford p/n].
thanks for the feed back. Bill "numbers dummy" told me 1958 Edsil had same parts on the 361 engine
I had a similer problem on a FT391 . What is your oil presure at cold start? What is it warmed up? The truck I was working on the pressure relief valve would stick when cold and then would release after a few minutes, it would blow out the filter seal , or leak out of the sending unit until the pressure dropped. This engine would have over 100 PSI. for a few minutes then would drop back to 60PSI cold . Hot ideling 35 PSI at 2000 RPM it had 55PSI. Cleaned the relief valve and no more problems.
Just Some Thoughts ------- Hotwrench
i seem to have same problem, my pressure sending unit is functioning now and i have high pressure reading[no numbers just hi n lo indication]at start up and then drops after engine warm up.
i was thinking maybe oil is too heavy a sae weight, but dont know. where is pressure relive valve ???

1975/78 Mustang II: Ford had to "shoehorn" the 302 into the engine compartment, uses a different oil filter: Motorcraft FL-300. Same as FL-1A except shorter.
Tom the pressure relief valve is located in the body of the oil pump, you will need to pull the oil pan and remove the pump. If the pressure relief valve is scored or the bore is damaged your best bet is just to replace the pump. Many time bits of hard valve seal material will get into the pump and cause this problem. Sometimes there is coked oil on the exh crossover and this material will break off and find its way into the oil system. Or it could be a chunk of silicone gasket sealer AKA ( the blue death ), it may be just a good idea just to pull the pan and give it a proper cleaning.

......found maintenace instructon in "Shop Manual" last night....thank you
thanks Bill, i asked for oil filter for an Edsil and got FL1a.
Edsel 361 not the same as a 361 FT engine, only used in 1958 and was a slight overbore of the 352.
If you had asked for a Spin-On filter for a 1958/60 Edsel 223/292/332/352 you still woulda got FL-1A. Or a 1960 Thunderbird 430, 1965 Mustang 289, or any other I-6 or V8 engine from 1957 thru the 1990's.
Excepting 1975/78 Mustang II 302 that uses FL-300.
Bill Isn't the FL-1A the Ford part for the Napa 1515? Or Fram PH8A?
IMO, it would be t'other way around since FL-1A is OEM.
But, I haven't a single clue what Fram or NAPA (whatever) part numbers are the same as FL-1A as I've never bought an aftermarket filter. Why would I need to since Ford dealers stocked 100's of genuine Ford filters?
Original 1957/60 Spin-On filter only had a Ford part number: B7A-6731-A / B7A-6731-A replaced in 1961 by C1AZ-6731-A (1962/72 Auto-Lite/1973/78 Motorcraft part number FL-1).
C1AZ-6731-A replaced in 1979 by D9AZ-6731-A (Motorcraft FL-1A).
i drained oil, it looked old & used. put in 3/4 gallon kerosene and some new oil; run engine for 1/2 hour. drained kerosene, replaced with new oil and oil filter. no blow by from filter on start up and oil pressure looks good, cross my fingers. this saturday's competion is on the otherside of the valley[20 miles] and will be returning late 9-10pm
