Newbie: 56 Build Advice

I have just acquired a 56 F100 and am researching what should be done to acheive a safety (S) level restoration. So far in the build examples on the site, which have been very helpful, I see power brakes with disks up front, Toyota power steering, a rebuilt Y-Block (292?) - there is no engine in it today and I guess a 3 speed manual to be original. I would like to lower a bit for better handling - so perhaps mono springs to get down 3" or so. Seat belts of course. New wiring harness.

What are the other major items that I need to think through? I am trying to lay everything out before I turn a single wrench.

My use is as a weekend "handyman" truck, not a trailer queen. Light hauling of yard stuff from the nursery, friends furniture. Need to be able to keep up on the freeway at 60 or so for short trips of less than 75 miles. Need heater, don't need air. Mainly, just need something that is very, very reliable. Wife will be driving as well so that's where the power steering/brakes/ reliability come in.

Love to hear your thoughts on what has worked for you. Thanks for taking time to answer. Will start a build post once activity begins.

I second pictures now We love the pictures!

For safety: 3 point seat belts, Mid-fifty sells the anchor point for the shoulder strap. Also a dual chamber master cylinder. You'll need a new MC for disc brakes anyways, but the original ones just have one chamber, so if you loose fluid you loose front and rear brakes rather than just one or the other.

For better handling many people put in a Mustang II type IFS suspension system up front.

It seems awkward, but whenever you "insert a picture" to one of these threads, the forum is looking for the picture somewhere on the web (which is always available) rather than from somewhere on your hard drive (which isn't always available).

Go to Image hosting, free photo sharing & video sharing at Photobucket and sign up for a free account. Then create an album for your truck. Upload any pics you want to post on FTE to that album. Have this album open on your computer when you want to post pics on FTE.

While you're making a post on FTE, select the pic you want to post from your Photobucket album. When the large version of the pic is open, right mouse click on it and select "View Image Info". The image info will be highlighted and will look something like this:
http://i285.photobucket.com/albums/l...ghtsafter1.jpg

Copy that highlighted info (right click / copy).

When you have the spot in your post where you want the pic to be placed, select the "Insert Image" icon at the top of the post (looks like a mountain) and paste (right click / paste) the image info you copied in the highlighted box (just shows "http://" when it opens).

Your pic will be placed in the post.

Hope that helps.
