I have a 1968 F-100 six cylinder with three speed manual transmission and I cannot shift into second or third. The column shifter is very loose and travel is considerable. I can get first and reverse without any problem. This is my first truck and someone told me I have a bad clutch, but he is not an old Ford truck person.
Thanks, in advance for your help.

Reason: clarification
Fist I would say use a title that helps describe your problem. What do your cab mounts look like? Shift tube in the column is good for the tab breaking off. You are dealing with a 40 yr old truck. It could be a multitude of things. If your cab mounts are rotted out that is your first place to start.

The cab mounts are fine. Where is the tab located?
"Sweated" onto the shift tube (sweated: similar to how front sights are attached to pistols/rifles).
The shift collar slips onto the shift tube, the rectangular shaped tab keeps it in place. If it has fallen off (a somewhat common occurrence), it's located down inside the column.
It can be welded back on, but the column will have to be disassembled to remove the shift tube.

On the bottom of the steering column under the hood are the two manual control selector levers that the shift rods from the trans attach to.
In each one of these levers is a rubber bushing and insulator. The bushings age crack/disintigrate, the shift lever binds up between 1st and 2nd.

Thank you so much for your reply. The shift lever is not binding at all and the rubber bushing and insulator haven't fallen off. What should I consider next.

If you cannot shift between 1st & 2nd, the shift lever is binding up. The bushings may be in place, but if age cracked, will cause the shift lever to bind up.
One selector lever is used for 1st & reverse, t'other is used for 2nd & 3rd. You can shift from 1st to reverse and vice versa, but you cannot shift into 2nd.
The shift lever is not binding and the rubber at the base of the column seems to be fine. The problem I have is that I cannot get the transmission to go into 1st or 3rd. I can drive it in reverse and in 2nd, but it will not go into 1st or 3rd. The shifter will move to the right positions but the gears do not engage.
