This link has a lot of good info on struts and shocks. One poster mentions that the OEM spec is for a much softer ride whereas the aftermarket replacements are not made to Ford spec but instead to a harder ride the manufacture believes is what people want.

Reading the posts here this seems evident as some people seem to prefer the harder ride and another group, myself included, who prefers the original softer ride. The fact that the Escape was the only small SUV that had the comfort of a full-sized car ride was one of the main reasons I bought it.

OP update.

After having the second set of Monroe's installed I still found the ride to be very hard. The installer agreed and told me to contact Monroe. I did and they told me that I would have to replace the Monroe's at my cost but Monroe would reimburse me for their product.
I bit the bullet and ordered Motorcraft struts and shocks. They cost roughly $100 more than the Monroe's, but the installer did give me a break on the installation cost.
After the Motorcraft's were installed I could not believe the difference. The ride on my Escape has been restored to ride I had when I first bought it.
I found the Monroe's to give a very hard ride where every nook and cranny on the road was felt. I thought I was driving a Fred Flintstone car. I have probably put on five or six sets of struts/shocks on various car and trucks using Monroe and I was always satisfied until it came to my Escape. IMO, if you want to restore the new car ride on an Escape Motorcrafts are the best option.
Now I will see how Monroe honors their guarantee. I will post went I receive payment.

OP update,

The Motorcraft replacements have been on for a month now and I am very satisfied with the ride.

This was the first and only time I was disappointed with Monroe replacements. Monroe had me return the struts and shocks to their engineering department. I was refunded the cost of the Monroe's and the installation cost by Monroe. I am very pleased with the way Monroe handled this situation and it is a credit to their business character.

Was that with the coils too or just the struts?

Glad to hear they stood behind the product and worked with you. That's getting rare!
