Heater question!

Hey guys, I was getting ready to put my heater and a/c back together so I could put my dash in, when I realized I need to replace the thing in the picture. I was at pick and pull today, and there is an 85 diesel with a good one in it. Would that work in my 80? Anything will help!
Thanks.

The diesel one

Standard heater? Or "Hi Output?"

Actually, I'm not sure it matters...

The parts book says 1980/87 are interchangeable but you may have some differences with the AC stuff (both engine compartment and passenger cab) and standard or hi-output heaters. For example, the wiring connectors for the fan (on the engine side) are entirely different from 1980 to 85 but I'm not sure that matters for you, I think the screw holes are all the same

So, my best guess is, try it and see.

First tell us what exactly is wrong with the "thing in the picture". Is the heater core bad, is the housing broken, are those silver cylinders bad, is the blend door bad, etc.

Shaun - I have one of those in my garage - from that 1981 that has donated parts to you.

I now think I have everything I need to install factory A/C into my truck. Bed comes Monday (or so they said) and I think all I need to my body swap now is 1) money, 2) time, 3) space, 4) more money. I also need to rebuild the front suspension really badly; wouldn't mind replacing bearings, seals & clutches in the rear end, too. *sigh*

Ya know, just about 3 weeks ago, I was thanking my brother for using the windshield shade when he parked the Taurus, it protects the dash from the sun.

He commented it also helps keep the car cooler.

Here we are, 3 weeks later, it's 30° outside and snowing.

If I had this past summer's time all over again, I could possibly do things to the truck for a change....

This thread reminds me that I need a new heater box myself, and that I want to upgrade to the Hi Output heater while I'm at it.

Last Thursday when I was doing lawncare, I had to drink two gallons of water just to keep from getting dehydrated. 92* temps with nasty humidity. If you want hot, I'll gladly trade you some hot for some cold!

The heater core is brand new. But if you look to the left of the heater core, that door on it is broken so it flops all over the place. It's got some rivits holding it on there, so I was thinking it was easier to go get that one from pick and pull! So, I'll go pick it up Monday.
