How to fix a tach?

I have a 92 f150 with a 302,and E4OD, the tach is acting weird. When the key is off it goes to zero, when you start it up it jumps to 2600, that's where it stays when it is at idle, it doesn't move unless you race the motor up or when you get above 60 mph. At 65 mph it shows 3000. What can i do to fix this? What should it be idleing at? Also it has a vaccum leak i cannot find it nowhere, what is the best way to find it, it sounds like it is coming from the back of the motor. The leak makes it idle higher. If you have any suggestions let me know please.

The only thing that makes sense to me is if your idle actually is at 2600 but you would be able to tell because the motor would sound like it is racing (2600 is highway rpm in drive--not overdrive). That would also correspond with your not getting a higher rpm until on the highway. If you have a vacuum leak and that makes it idle higher, I would fix the vacuum leak first and then see if the tach still is weird. First check all the vacuum hoses for cracking, rips, etc. I think some folks have used starting fluid to find vacuum leaks as it will make the engine rev beiefly, but starting fluid also is highly flamable and you need to be careful.

How to fix a tach?

I bought the truck almost 3 years ago, the tach has been like that every since i bought it. The vaccum leak just started about a month ago. Before the leak started it sounded like it was idleing at about 900 or 1000, but with the leak it sounds like about 1300 to 1500. The gauge acts like there's something keeping it from going lower, but when you turn the truck off it goes to zero. Is there anyway to adjust it?

Not sure. My F150 has an aftermarket tach. Perhaps a replacement instrument panel from a wrecking yard truck that also has a tach may solve your problem. My aftermarket tach (which meets auto manufacturer spec) does have a calibration screw. You could pull the instrument panel and see if there is an adjustment on the back of your tach, but it doesn't seem like that would be the problem.

How to fix a tach?

I have a 92 F150 302 that does the same thing. When I checked the idle with a hand tach it is right were its suppose to be. Its annoying but I have been ignoring it since its an automatic. I assume there is a problem in the tach its self but I would like to fix it also.
Regards
Gasman

Yeah Gasman it is annoying, i started to ignore it to, but here lately it started bugging me again. I'm going to take dash apart and see if i can see anything wrong with it and see if i can adjust it my self.

I looked in the Haynes manual but the wiring diagrams are really hard to read. I have ordered a manual from Helms hopefully they will be better. Let me know what kind of luck you have.

Good luck
