Hard Cranking 66

I have a 1966 F-100 with stock 352 engine. The truck runs perfect on the road with no problems. Here lately after sitting for about 20 to 30 minutes when I go to crank it the engine turns over and over before it will finally starts. If it sits for about 5 minutes it cranks fine!I took the carb. off and put a new economizer valve and float needle and seat in it.Is it possible for the coil to do this?I put new points, condensor, plugs in also. The carb kit I got from Ford, but I did not do a complete rebuild because the truck runs perfect after it finally cranks.Has anyone ran in to this problem. Thanks,Russ

It might be vapor lock. My truck does this is I run anything other than the cheapest gas I can find and its a hot day and I'm asking the truck to do more than normal amounts of work. Just a thought. I got a can of starting fluid and have it just in case.

I had that happen after I installed an alum. intake, installed a 1" phenolic spacer under the carb. and it stopped. Seems that it was boiling the gas out. Don't know if you may have made other changes not mentioned.

2nd that on gas boiling over. Next time it happens after its sets for that 20 min period, try this. Hold it to the floor (DO NOT let up on it) or it will get worse - don't want to pump more gas into it. While you have it to the floor, crank it over and it should start after a few cranks. What this does is, blows the raw gas out of the motor. It should start up once its cleared.
And yes, install a carb isolator as John said to stop the boil over. 5 mins usually doesn't boil gas unless its very high temps outside. 20 mins yes.

As for the starting fluid, be careful how much you use, it can wash down the cylinder walls. Very hard on motors.

OK gentlemen, where can I find a 1" spacer for a stock 352 engine with a motorcraft 2100 carb? I am willing to give it a try.I still think it is strange that years back the truck always cranked fine.I did have the intake gasket replaced a while back, but I can't say that is when the problem started!! Thanks,Russ

Your favorite local parts house is where I'd start looking.

Well,I never did get my truck problem fixed.I have a 1" spacer installed and I have tried different power valves.Truck runs excellent and cranks good until it sits about 20 to 30 mins. and it acts like it is flooded when starting.Any ideas on what else to check? Can it be this wonderful gas we have now?
