I'm thinking about putting a 4.0 in my 4WD '85 BroncoII. Will the transmission and transfer case that's already in it work? What other modifications will I need to make? Any information will be helpful. Thanks.
If i knew i would let you know. I'm also thinkin of puttin a 4.0L in my 85 B2 or possibly rebuildin the 86 2.9L thats in it, but I'm thinkin of some Keith Black pistons and possibly a better cam or something. If it isn't gonna cost too much that is. Info on the bolt in for the 4.0L would be good.
ya i need it for an 86 to. i have no choice on myne though. lifters finally quit on me and the rest of the engine is unrepairable without a rebuild so ill go to a 4 if anyone can give me advice though id love you for it.
Yes the 4.0 will work but it is hard but not too hard. i have not doin it but i am goin to soon . i have a 86 bronco 11 2.9 auto putin a 87 stick and a 94 4.0 so i really don't know if it will work but i will let yall Know.
I just converted my 86 B2 automatic from a 2.9 to a 4.0. I highly recommend this motor over a V8. The 4.0 will bolt right in! Even with a V6 the 4.0 will amaze you with the power. I must warn you to be on guard for more fuel consumption, I love the power and so I sacrfice fuel consumption. I got luckey and found a garage that had done a prior conversion, they almost didn't want to convert it but my BII's computer was an OBD1, the one they did prior was OBD2 and they had problems all through the conversion. Also prepare to drop about 4-6 grand on the total conversion, replace radiator, hoses, wiring, air intake box etc. When obtaining replacement 4.0 motor, it is VERY important to get computer and wireing harness. Good luck all!

If you have the know-how and can read wireing schematics you'll do fine, this is not a project for the back yard mechanic. I looked into doing it myself but found a lot of potential problems-mostly by not having all the right tools and resources. If you do it yourself you'll save a bundle.
