Anybody replaced or overhauled their main fuse box before? My dome light fuse no longer comes in contact with the metal due to a tap that used to be in place. This tap expanded the slot and now the metal tab is broke so it pushed back in the box.
I need to either pull the box our and repair that spot or replace the unit. I attempted this once before but it looked like the harness does not easily remove from it. Or maybe I just got scared and didn't try hard enough? I don't know.
Ford may sell a pigtail that has the correct connector on it. You would simply pull out the faulty wire, splice on the pigtail and re-insert it into the fuse panel. Disconnect both batteries before sticking tools into the fuse panel slots....
Another option is to find the correct Molex connector from your local electronic parts store and solder it onto the wire yourself (replacing the faulty tab).
One more option would be to find a used harness from a salvage yard and obtain your pigtail that way.
Lastly,
There MAY be some wires coming out the back of the fuse box that are dead ended. If so, then you can use a dental pick to actuate the little release tab and pull the wire out the back of the box. Then you can use that wire as a pigtail.
i had mine replaced....probably over paid but it cost $500 with labor
Good to see you around Shawn!
I had my under hood box replaced back in 2003...
The previous owner kept blowing a trailer light fuse and put a jumper wire there instead. It eventually melted the plastic box and turned in to a big mess.
Poor installation of a 6 pin trailer plug was the culprit. Loose wire inside the pot metal housing was causing a dead short....
500 bucks labor tells me it is as big of a pain as it looked. Not having the dome light come on with the doors isn't a big deal but kind of a pain in the winter when its so dark out all the time.
Removing the box isnt as difficult as it seems... the biggest pita is the 2 big harnesses you have to unbolt to get them unplugged. Not much ratchet room... but once you get it in there... it just takes patience and about 1/8th turns...
Once its all disconnected... including the 2. Or 3 gem connectors... it takes some fenangling to get the box out from between the dash and the pcm.
