I have a 00 superduty v10 and I've been having some rough idling and hesitation issues no check engine light I do smell some sulfer but I was wondering if this is a bad cat sure would like some feed back on this matter!!!
When was it last tuned up? Change the coil pack boots? I wouldn't start with a bad cat, do some regular maintenance stuff like checking the PCV valve hose. They are known to crack and cause issues. Also clean the MAF sensor with MAF cleaner and get some throttle body cleaner and clean up the throttle body and Idle Air Control valve. It won't set a code
Not sure on when it was last tuned but its been real rainy and damp here for a least a week I wonder if this has got something to do with it that I can c but when I hit the throttle pedal sometimes it just spuders and ill also noticed that the exhaust seems hotter than normal if that makes any sence!!!
Have you noticed any loss of power?
If it is your cat, you can remove your o2 sensors, and secure them up out of the way, then run your truck, for a small trip around the block or up a steep hill. If you notice more power or get more exhaust out of the o2 holes then your tail pipe, chances are it's getting plugged. Also see if you still have the smell while their out.
if your engine isn't running right.
the cat is doing it's job, of cleaning up the exhaust. thus the sulfur smell and the exhaust getting hot.. the cat is burning the incompletely burned hydrocarbons..
fix the poorly running engine and the cat will behave…
check all of the spark plug wires, boots and replace as needed. clean the sensors, including the o2 sensors in the exhaust.. clean the throttle body. check for and clear codes, then give the engine a try..
at mid r.p.m. listen to the exhaust, if it has a hiss in it, you may have a restricted exhaust system… repair/replace as needed..
if it's still running rough, check compression, do a leak down test.
