Hey guys I am sorry for this really simple question, but I need to replace all my belts and when looking on RockAuto.com there are a ton of options and I'm not sure what to get.
Truck is an F250 7.3 Diesil w AC. I've never changed belts before, do all of the belts run off of the fan? As I notice they are listed as Fan to A/C, or Fan to Vaccum pump, Fan to P/S etc.
I thought about just ordering what I thought might cover me as they seemed pretty cheap but figured asking here first might be the better option.
Any other installation tips would be much appreciated.
Ya I thought about doing that. I will do that when I get home. It's just I am at work right now and I was really wanting to place the order to get things moving.
Figured there was someone who had just done it that could chime in with some quick advice. They were listing a vaccum pump belt, what exactly is a vaccum pump?
Installation is pretty straight-forward. Start with the belt on the outside, then work in. For each, you'll need to loosen the accessory it drives in order to get some slack in the belt. To do this, you'll need to loosen two bolts. One will go through a slotted section on the accessory or its bracket. This is what allows the adjustment in belt tension. The other is the bolt that accessory rotates around. Kinda confusing, but stare at it for a bit and it'll make sense.
Another tip: unless they're COMPLETELY shot, throw the old belts in the truck for emergencies.
Diesel engines don't produce vacuum like a gas engine, because there is no throttle valve in the intake. You need vacuum for your brake booster and other things, so they have a belt-driven vacuum pump...
2 Tips:
Never buy V belts off line, there are so many variations its easier to take them in and match them up, or start in the computer then have them pull them and see if they look right. Probably be best to do it in the parking lot at advance so you can return them till you get the right one. I also keep the package they come in with the old belt in it. Of course I don't have any original accessories so that doesn't help.
Definitely keep the old belts for spares. Would be a shame to tear one in half a month later and not have an ok one lying around.
