Brake Reservoir

On my 79 f-150 4x4 the front portion of the reservoir is alway dropping fluid. Not very fast, but once every couple of months it will be down an inch or so from the top. Any ideas what would be causing this? (I havent checked all the lines yet)

Look for a leak in the rear drums.

A little more detail........not only is it dropping in front, but it seems to be over filling the rear portion of the reservoir, as when you take the cover of, fluid spills all over off of the back. Also, this is the third master cylinder we have tried.

Afraid to say, bad master cylinder.

Next time you replace it flush out the entire brake system. You may have some contamination in the system. Something is causing the seals in the master cylinder to go bad.

Where do you get & what brand are made with stainless

sleeves ? I've had the same type of master cylinder probs. with

both my '79 F150's. My first went through them every couple

years, and this one's leaking out the back by booster now.

Was going to post on this, but looks like I'm not the only one...

Thanks. J.R.

Actually if the manufacturers used cast iron they would be OK. Unfortunately they haven't used cast iron in about 20-30 years. Cast steel is used for brake parts nowadays. Cast steel does not have the same excellent corrosion properties that cast iron does.

Stainless does work well

I just finished installation of a new master cylinder on mine. I did buy a new one, instead of rebuilt. Changing the brake fluid every year or two will 'help' to prevent the corrosion. The DOT 3 fluid is very hygroscopic (absorbs water), and this is what corrodes the master cylinder bore.

Stainless steel; now why didn't I think of that........?

Hey Dennis,

Looked in yahoo & google and at company that had EIS parts,

but couldn't find Ford master cylinders that had stainless sleeves.

Are these available, or do you have to send out yours to have

it sleeved ? One company offered this service, but would like

to buy one ready to bolt in if possible... Thanks. J.R.
