The general rule is 10:1 with iron and 11:1 with aluminum. Personally, Id rather be under 9.5:1 with 87oct.

I wouldnt dump any $ into a set of D3s aside from a basic thermactor bump grinding and the right springs/retainers/locks. Save your $ and buy real heads if you plan on racing full time but I think a 521 with basically stock iron heads and mild/moderate hydraulic cam will make more power than you'll know what to do with on trails and around teh Joppa.

If not buy some tfs streets like Kris and let it eat
How much?
Will it be street/trail happy?
Have to stick with iron to stay in my class. I don't want to go full race/retard mode, it is going to stay multipurpose and possibly go back on the street when I get all of the small things sorted out.

I have no problem putting premium in and/or dumping in octane booster if necessary, but I want to stay away from race fuel I think. I also don't mind loosing some low end, it has plenty for what I do (besides the mud bogs) as is and I haven't even regeared it or put the doubler in yet. At the same time, I don't want to get into huge stall converters or having to rev it like a honda to make any power... won't be any good for trails that way. I'm not sure the motor I have now ever made the power it was supposed to given all the problems I had getting it running and it over heating and blahblahblah, so I don't know what to expect power wise.

Lem sells those stroker kits on the 460 site for around 1150 I think. Those d3's you have now have a decent set of springs for a Hyd flat cam like you have and are already ported for the small valves. To make them work with the larger displacement you will be better served to at least add the larger exhaust valve. But I will agree with kris that unless its absolutely a last ditch that you can't get around iron heads, the money needed to rework them is wasted over putting that money into a set of aluminums.

Remember George when you went all gitty gitty and ran it into the wall in Branchville? Yeah....Imagine the wall is a cliff at Rausch Creek. You dont want that.

I can guarantee the engine you have now is not up to its potential because its a copy of the best engine Ive ever had in George. Great power, fun, reliable and decent on pump gas. Ive thought 100 times about rebuilding the same deal for George and keeping the 521 for something a little more competitive as a full race truck.

Pick a cam smaller than what you need and have fun with it. Its hard to go back once youve gone too big.

How much for the head work I meant

I have to stick with the iron heads if I want to stay in my "super street" class up here.
