DOVE Heads will be home soon

Just got a call from the guy, we're going to meet up later this afternoon or this evening, he has to head my way for a dinner so it'll save me some drive time to hook up with him.

He's firm on the price...so no wiggle room there...I guess it's time to actually get the spreadsheet going on Clint's site to begin tracking our costs.

I'm sure we'll hit the 400HP/500ft/lb mark with these heads and our cam choice...well, if it were a 454-BBC for sure, we'll have to see how the 460 responds.

Right on Mike. Sounds like a good score.

Sorry I haven't been around too much lately. I've been super busy. I haven't even had time to read all the threads lately.
I promise, as soon as I get 'er done, I'll be back to normal and chime in more often.

Just brought the heads home, valves look better than our D3's, we might still be sporting the luck of the cheap-*******s.

These have adjustable valve train, the guy was sure they were "pre-'68" heads, not sure what that means but he did mention it to me.

D0 means 1970, D8 and D9 are '68 and '69 - very near the same heads.

Very good deal - thanks for getting them for us!

D8 & D9 would be 79 & 79, 68 & 69 would be C8 & C9,

C= 60's
D= 70's
E= 80's

And so forth,

The rockers are still non adjustable, you just torque the nut to a specific torque,
& is bottoms on the shoulderd stud,

They should be 72-75 cc combustion chambers,

I saw a lot of compression ratios flying in the other thread, if you get a chance cc the piston dish & see what it is, if they are indeed 28 cc then you are looking at right around 9:1,
with those heads & flat tops you'll be pushing into the mid 11:1 area.

Yes...from what I could gather, the stock dish is 28CC's, we won't be upgrading pistons, so the 9:1 will be about where we end up at. Good to know on the rockers, they sure looked like adjustable...but glad they aren't...just makes it that much easier to put together.

Oh, I had some questions about the pushrods in the other thread, if you get a chance...but if you read it here...

The stock PR's we have are pressed in ends, I'm thinking we should go to a 1-pc PR....

Also, with the mild cam we have and only about .500-.520 lift, pretty sure standard length PR's would be fine?

I can always whack one of the originals up and make it adjustable and check the contact area

Heck of a game of thread tag we have going here,

thumbs up on the one piece push rods, I'm not 100% but I think there are 2 different "stock" push rod leangths, you will want the ones for 72 and later, (taller deck block by about .020") hacking up one of the old ones is not a bad Idea, it is always good to check valve geometry,

Oh by the way,

Your it.

I ask this question on the 385 forum, and someone answered:

"*****- you would have to change rocker arms and pushrods, and assuming a 0 deck and standard head gaskets- 9.79-1 compression with the d0ve's- so youd have to run pump premium. the reason youd have to change rockers is the d0ve's have stud mount rockers, and d3ve's have pedestal mount rockers"

I don't know what is right, and don't care about the compression ratio, but we will need to check the rockers.

Just because someone said it was true doesn't mean that it is, yet on the other hand he posted that in a technical forum and I would expect some body to jump in if they though he was wrong.

Leeroy,
I hear what your saying about the taller deck height, but from my experience...
Back in the day of my old 73 highboy, I had a D3VE engine, and placed a set of D0VE heads on top. What I found was that the push rods from the D3 didn't allow the valves to close, hence too long. Fortunately, I still had the D0 push rods, and installed them. Then she ran like a stripedassed ape.
IMO, try the shorter D0 push rods, or at least make sure you don't loose them, just in case my memory is acurate.

I have been told that one of the nice things about the studded rockers (C8 - D0) is that you can bolt in some of the adjustable Chevy rockers on there.
Regarding the above discussion on adjustable push rods, this might be something else to consider.

Oh yeah, also, on my newly rebuilt 460 (C8 with stock dished pistons), I was told that approx 9:1 is the correct ratio for that application...

I need to open up a new thread to put all the information in one place

I didn't get the D0 pushrods with the heads, but since I'd like to upgrade to 1-pc anyways, I can make an adjustable one out fo th D3 PR's, check the geometery, then order the correct length.
