Last week I installed a pertronix in my truck. And it really does run better and seems to doing better on gas. I was a little worried about the generator thing. But I will try it and see what happens. I only driven it 200 miles but so far so good. The points are in the glove box.
MSD had problems with generators but seem to have fixed it. Ive heard no Petronix problems that appear to be gennie related but it is a good idea to add (if not already installed) by pass capacitors at the genny and regulator.
Cheap insurance.
Paul, a genny's brush arcing causes voltage spikes that can fry some solid state electronics. The mechanical regulator cant react fast enough and it can cause its own set of spikes from points arcing; regulator points that is. The caps I mentioned are originally to suppress noise in the old AM radios; however since they do it by snubbing the spikes they work fine for new stuff.
An update on the pertronix. I am not sure but I think it is going bad I may have a bad one. I will call them to see what they say. It ran great when I first put it on better gas milage and all. Then I took it on a 200mi trip and I notced the gas milage was back were it was before. Then yesterday I was in heavy traffic and it started misfireing between 500 and 800 rpm and missing at idle. When I got home I pulled a plug wire and it wouldn't even zap me. I put a new set of points in and all the problems went away. It seems that the the igniter lost it's ability to switch or got week some how. I am sure the generator had nothing to do with it as the am fm has worked for years. Has anyone else have a problem with their igniter? Or is it just me and got a dud?
