This is what happen to me. I went out and bought a brand new Chevy 03, 2500 6.6 diesel with the allison trans. I put 7,000 miles on it and had it in the shop 8 times for various problems. The four wheel drive didnt work, the brakes and a/c worked sometimes (computer problems)...and so on and so on. Needless to say I paid 40,000 for this truck and it was a piece of crap. The thing rattled everywhere.
So I traded it in and lost 5,000. Better now than later I guess. I now own a 03 Expedition EB and have 141 miles on it. Seems to be built much better than the chevy and I paid 2,000 less. As for gas mileage on my chevy just for those of you who want to know. The diesel was getting around 13mpg in the city and 18mpg on long trips. I think this new 5.4 will be comparible, but ots to early to tell.
Congrats on the new truck, and welcome to FTE. I think you will find this board a great tool in finding information about all 3 of the big makers. We are a little biased toward ford because of our experiences, but still give objective advice.
