OEM head gaskets

Getting head studs and am having to get all the parts together. I'm running into the 18mm vs 20mm issue. One seller says the VIN will answer this question. Dude at Tousley Fords says it won't and that we can't order gaskets until after the heads are pulled and measured. Which is true?

3C3Z-6051-CB should be the correct part number for the head gasket set on a 2003 engine.

That is apparently what I got. They are considered OEM, MLS (multilayered steel) and my mechanic was satisfied with them. Got them for $63 each plus tax.

Victor Reinz head gaskets are not OEM. They are essentially the same as Black Onyx and they have a MUCH higher failure rate than OEM.

The dealer has them. Probably cost you about 300 for both sides. VR are the Black Onyx and more than likely you will be redoing the job if you use them.

Clay might just be using a different Ford catalog number for his kits, because both his headgasket PNs are for E-Series vans.

Maybe Mark, Mike or Cheezit can confirm the cross reference, or you can call Clay tomorrow. I don't think there are a ton of 18mm OEM gaskets running around though.

Wouldn't even bother checking with those rip-off artists. They asked me $17 plus tax for a degas bottle cap ($6 MORE than MSRP). Got it from Tousley Ford for less than $9, shipping and all. Tousley is out of gaskets and won't have any until the end of the month.
