Driveshaft problems

86 ford F250 deisel 7.3 ext cab 4x4. been having problems with the tailshaft vibration, replaced both u-joints once. had the nut back off a titch on the rear yoke and had to replace the back u-joint again. vibration seemed to come and go. blew the tailshaft off the other day doing 90km hr down the highway. i'm looking at replacing the whole shaft with something stonger? better than original, maybe off a newer truck. what else might fit or come close to machine? or i could replace just the tailshaft

I can't offer any specifics since I'm just getting familiar with Fords again, but just general driveshaft comments.
Did you have it balanced after replacing the u-joints? I've seen driveshafts throw balance weights (or knocked off when off-roading).
Were the u-joints seized and causing vibration?
Extended driveshaft vibration can cause transfer case output bearing or pinion bearing damage which can cause vibration even after the driveshaft is fixed.
I can't remember what the locknuts are like on the u-joints but many locknuts should be replaced with new. And even if multiple use, it's cheap insurance.

Replacing the tailshaft with a good one may solve your problems. Make sure your slip yoke(if that's the type you have) is good also. If you have the slip yoke style, there is a bushing in the tailshaft that supports the yoke, and if these pieces are worn, will let the the shaft vibrate, especially when you are in that "inbetween" state on the gas pedal, with no load on it going down the road.

the original u-joints that we replaced were worn with age, that was 4 months ago and things were ok till the pinion yoke nut came loose and the closest ujoint shattered and it was then that the vibration persisted im thinking that the front yoke on the shaft had a hairline crack. thats what broke and split.
I need a new tailshaft and at the same time i'll drop the front shaft and have the bushing replaced for now. is there any other year of ford that would fit this truck?

Here are all the different combos of shafts for a 1985 f250. You need to know your wheelbase to narrow it down a little bit. Go to Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market where I got this info, plug in your truck, Georgia and pick the right shaft, and see if anyone has any down there. It will do the interchange for you also(it will select other years in the left column automatically).
