towing with zf5

i usually start out in 2nd with the zf-5 since the 1st gear is so low. should i start out in 1st when i'm towing a trailer with a extra big jeep on it? or would i still be ok starting out in 2nd?

If you can smell the clutch or the engine stalls, you should have used 1st.

I always use 1st when starting with a load or trailer. That's why you have it. It will help prolong the life of the transmission if you use it.

If you feel the engine bog at all, start in a lower gear. That's about the best way to tell. Or if you have to give a lot of gas, hence to keep it from bogging.

I have a 95 f-350 351 with the same tranny.. I always use first gear. Also I have a friend that owns a towing company and has several trucks with the same tranny and it has been his experience that the 2nd gear bearing get excessive play if first gear is not used during any type of pulling. It is about $750 for each tranny to get repaired.
