where to start

in need of a little advise as to where to start. i have replaced small stuff like the window regulators, and did some light sanding and primering on surface rust... not sure where i should concentrate my energy... truck runs great, decent body, average rust.... definately going to have some panel repairs. bed floor is shot, but i have found a complete bed in great condition. (for close to the price of the wood to repair the one on it). (styleside). I do have a 4 speed bull dog in the truck now, but originally it was an automatic, I dont care for the bulldog and will be replacing it with an automatic, but here again, not sure what to do. what kind of tranny, I was told that a later model tranny would work and i could get one with a mechanical overdrive, Is this true and what years would work.

any and all help is greatly appreciated.

To my knowledge all the tranny's with over drive are the AOD's and that wont work, How do I know I bought an AOD trying to see if it would work and the bell housing is the same shape but it has a different bolt pattern some bolt holes are too high and others are too low.

The type of tranny that you want to get all depends on what motor you have if you have a 351M-460 it is easier to find a C6, and if you have a 351W or smaller you will want to find a C4. This is of course if you are still wanting to get an auto.

I would do all the mechanical stuff first because if you do body work first and get a new paint job you will hit you truck with a tool, part or something else and you will get pissed lol.

Making it absolutely mechanically reliable to start, stop, steer are the big 3 in my book, before ANY body work.

All standard tune up items and all fluids replaced.

Brakes/brake sys, steering tie rods, drag link, radious arm bushings.

Fuel delivery...tank, sending unit, inline filters.

Eng cooling, radiator flush.

Electrical sys....lights, gauges, charging.....

Pick a problem and start the task of fixing it and try to not get side tracked.

C-6 will be easy to locate and should swap right in?

2x with the above. I'd add "hack patrol" to the list... correcting all those "repairs' performed by previous owners.

definately enough things to correct, had the truck checked out by a mechanic friend, he said everythiing in the steering was good, with the exception of the steering box, he said it has some play and that was causing my, loose steering issue... not real bad, but not like i want it.

that will be job1.

I think i will still be knocking some old rust off and working on body repair, i am dying to use my welder.....lol
