I have an old walk behind Gravely lawn mower I am thinking about restoring. It was my dad's and before that it was my mothers' dads. It hasn't been used for probably 15 years but it ran just fine the last time it was used (my dad just got tired of mowing an acre once a week with a 50yr old walk behind Gravely so he bought a used Bowlens riding mower).
Has anyone here ever attempted to restore a Gravely or any old lawn tractor? I've never attemted such a thing but think it would be a fun long term project.
Thanks,

I recently started rebuilding an old Allis Chalmers B-10 and found a lot of info from this site: http://www.simpletractors.com. They deal with Allis and Simplicity but you might find info there on the Gravely. The next one I am going to rebuild is a old Pond walk behind but it will probably be spring before I start on it.
I just did a quick search and found this site:http://www.stevenchalmers.com/Gravely/Gravely.shtml that should be what your looking for.
The B-10 sat for 21 years becuase the engine smoked real bad, turned out to be just a cracked piston. $54 later and now it runs like a
top.
I remember the Gravelys (60s) as having a sulky so you didn't walk behind, but sat down and the thing would easily do two or three acres with no problem. Perhaps you could make a sulky and try it.
I have one it was my father's tractor. We got tired of walking 5 miles everytime the lawn needed to be mown. We are going to sell it as its been sitting in the basement for 4 years now. Still have all the attachments too. Ive rebuilt it before pretty simple job its just a little harder to get parts for.
I mow five acres with a gravely 50 in mower with riding sulky. You it one tough machine. Its thrown my wife off so many times i had to put a dead man switch on it.
My dad has had the same gravely for 16 years i believe. It out lasted his F-250, and you all know that is somethin great!
He tells me about his old walk behind that was made to cut through thick field grass and such. He used it to clear out some property. He says it would chop thru inch thick sapplings with ease.
The riding mower Gravely we have now has a 12hp Kholer engine, and the thing just wont die. The electrical stuff all crapped out (ie headlights, safety stuff) so we had it go in for a tuneup and now its good as new. I don't think you can break this Gravely.
I was mowing one day and the muffler shot off and flew across the yard... that was pretty much the only problem it ever had
I made a huge spoiler for it out of alluminum flashing, and i'm gunna get some Type-R and NOS stickers for it!
