Best Torque/Pulling Engine?

For pulling: six cylinder
Ford- 300 six
Chevy- 292 six
Mopar- Slant six was great but it wouldn't tow much, none that I can think of

For pulling: V8
Ford- 351M, 351C, 400, FE motors, 460
Chevy- 350, 454
Mopar- 318, 340, 360, 383
Slant six was a bit short on cubes. Don't forget the GM 300 cid V6 in the 1960s. That was supposed to have been a killer stump puller.

I have heard that the Buick 455 is a much better low end grunt motor than a Ch**y 454. Still, I'll take a 460 Ford.

The Ford engines seem to have their torque peaks at a much lower RPM than Ch**ys, which makes Ford a better truck enginee.

Best Torque/Pulling Engine?

hey, my buddy says a 300 i6 is WAY better than a 400m. Personally I dont think so because Im sure the 400m had more torque.

Unless the 300 is built and the 400 old and tired, otherwise your buddy is, well, full of it...

Best Torque/Pulling Engine?

A 300 will pull strong with the right gears, as will any engine. I am a true lover of Ford 300I6 engines, but it will not out torque a 400m. At the flywheel that is, if you put a 300I6 into a truck and gear it down low enough it is possible to out pull a 400m with a 300I6. But the same hold true for the 400, when it comes to pulling it's all about gears!

Yes, but what about the usability of the truck, IF all you will use for is a farm vehicle, then o.k, but if you gear it to pull better than a much larger v-8 then you will have no highway usability out of it, with top speeds in the 40 mph range. I mean you can pull 10,000 pounds with 5 hp (look at wiches) but what good does it do? I personally think this motor is overrated, the one I drove in a f-250 pulled good ONLY because of the gearing, it wouldnt get out of it's own way otherwise.

Ahheem...... I own a 1979 f-250 4x4, np 435, np 205, 351m. 3.56....31's.

I race a 1968 Buick skylark custom with a built 455.

The 455 stock got 13mpg, with 360hp, and 510 lbs of tq.
AND it was the lightest big block ever made by the big 3, weighing in at 614lbs. These buick engines, (THE 350 and 455)
were placed in kaiser jeep pickups, 3/4 and 1 ton for that reason.
My Buick 350 lasted 227000k until the head gaseket popped for no reason, thats when I went to the 455.
The car hauled some serious *** with 2.73 gears because it is a torque monster and it redlines at 4400 rpm, If I had a truck that wasnt a ford, I would put the Buick 455 in it!!!

Who can make a list descending from strongest to weakest ford motor? Starting with 460 and ending in their 289 oe 300i6???

I was wondering whats stronger than what. Like is a 400m stronger than a 390? is a 351c stronger than a 360? stuff like that, I wana see what everyone thinks.

This is about as much as I think I know for torque
460
351c
400m

300i6
302
289

Best Torque/Pulling Engine?

It's not what we think is what matters, it's what's true, correct or applicable.

I had a 351 Cleveland, but they never were put in a truck (unless you consider a Ranchero a "truck". ). So why even discuss it?

Nor was the 289 ever put in one either, why? They were designed for street rods.

Just as radical cams won't do truck work, neither will race bred engines.

The 460 was the workhorse for Ford's entire compliment of vehicles, from family sedans to heavy duty pick up trucks. It was from the FF class, and there were differences in valving, camming, etc between truck and sedan engines.

When Ford put the FF class engine into their pick up trucks, the FE began to fade away. They could produce awesome torque figures also.

The 400 was not really a noteworthy engine. The 390 and 360 could give you more grunt (FE engines).

For a short time, the 460 was banned from the California models, about three or four years. It nearly killed Ford because it was an awesome option for motorhome builders, and the truck and trailer guys were switching to Dodge with the admirable 440, or Chevy's 400. (I think the 454 was banned for even a longer time).

Ur right I didnt mention them, and I shouldn't have mentioned the 289 either. Afterall pops is right, it wasnt put in a truck.

I thought I had a book around the house with specific horsepower numbers for all the ford motors from the 60's to the 90's including the newer 4.6L and 5.4L.

Torque roughly follows displacement.

460
429
428 (428 had a longer stroke than 427)
400
427
390
300-6
351WMC -This is a confused mess
352
302

Accurate comparison figures are hard to find due to compression ratio changes, production years don't overlap, and HP/Torque specification methods were changed in 72. Some figures were inferred from towing ratings.

-And a 350 Buick engine lasted 227 Million miles!!!! WOW, I hope you mean 227,000 miles... The old dodge 318 I had may have made it that far also, it had almost 200K when I got rid of it and it was running many years thereafter. There are some notable mileage champs out there. I know of a 300-6 that had over 250K road miles and countless hours idling for heat and electrical power on top of that.

it was nice to see dennis say somthing about the FE motors..i think ford was wrong to drop them..460 is a great motor but its heavy and the FE is the only one to win 24hrs at lamans..talk about power and torque..no gm or dodge can has that bragging rights only ford with its FEs. i have been able to find lots of hot rod goodys by looking around here under the hoods of old grain haulers and dump trucks and emergancy trucks..ford put really good stuff in them sometimes.you just have to look for casting numbers..go ford go..lol bill
