having towed with most makes. I can say that chevys power band is very usable. But for the big jobs. Even a non turbod diesel can do quite well. Some guys haul around 25 to 30k with diesels. Ive spoken with farmers that have done it for years. I personally havent towed that heavy. But its nice to know its possible. Id stay off the interstate with that much weight.
193,000+ on my '91 F150 I6 E4OD. Bought it with 73,000+ on it. No major problems yet. I goes when I need it to go. Not a lot of giddy-up but it will run the numbers off on the freeway. Get 16 mpg on the road also. Plenty of pull for what I have towed.
260k out of our 86 I6 after spinning a rod bearing. Not bad for frequently pulling a 6000lb cattle trailer and other farm equipement. Didn't pull it fast but it pulled it. Rebuilt motor and it's still living. C6 transmission also still going strong with nothing but late oil changes done to it. best truck we ever owned....
i have a 300 with 163000 miles and i have never had an internal engine problem. i have had 3 chevys and all went to the junkyard and all three had no more than 150000. as for dodge i have never owned one so i cant complain. girlfriends stepdad is a dodgenut tho and he has 2 dodge trucks and a stratus. his 73 with 318 has 250000miles but it is only running on about 5 cylinders. other truck is an 83 and he just put a new 318 in it but has to hook up all hoses and such. my 300 has plenty of power should have even more after i get my 11" clutch kit in it. gfs bro got his tbird stuck in a ditch and thought my truck couldnt pull it out. his friend has a chevy1500 with a 4.3v6 and couldnt pull it out. took my truck down there and pulled it right out and pulled it home. made him look foolish. only wish it was 4x4. 4.9l baby!!!

Well I have to say my 84 F150 300 I6 has never failed to get the job done when it comes to pushing and pulling. It's an indestructable motor, way better than the 302 for towing. Even with oversize tires and 3.08 gears mine still pulls just as strong as it did with stock tires. I have finished jobs that a small block started but couldn't finish. But every I6 owner knows the 300s towing weakness, heavy loads uphill they just don't quite have the mid-high end power to maintain speed going uphill. Over all it is the best gas six cylinder truck engine ever made. The best V8 is a draw between Chevrolet's 454 and Ford's 460 big blocks. Both motors build gobs of torque all the way to the redline.
IMHO the 300 is as close to a desiel as you can get with out actually burning oil. tons of torqe made at very low rpm's. low horsepower #'s, not the fastest and relys on low gears to get it rolling, almost as reliable. i would love to mate a new 6 speed to a 300 and build it alittle. maybe turbocharge it. it would probally respond to mods like that like a desiel would. ive seen plans on here in the past for a twin turbo charged 300 that on paper put out like 600 ft-lbs. and 300 horse or something like that. what a ride that would be combine that with the 6 speed and some 4.56's. you'de never stop it. they put a HD version of the 300 in to city busses, whats that tell ya.

300 i6? its an abomination on an otherwise clean slate of truck motors. Utterly useless motor, blows head gaskets, oh the list goes on forever.
This has got to be the most STUPID comment ever made on this site. The 300 I-6 is one of the best motors EVER built.
I drove a '92 F-150 with a I-6 and E-4od tranny, this truck had over 150k on it and got 17 mpg. I delivered parts for the local Ford dealer with this truck. My brother had a '89 F-150 shortbed 4x4 with a I-6 and spd. These motors are great, it's just to bad that Ford quit making them in '97 because they were too long to fit in the new F-150's.
Maybe Aten never checked his oil, coolant, plugs, wires, oh the list goes on forever.
The 7.5 460 = best light truck pulling motor torque.
The 7.3 PSD = best light truck desiel motor torque.
The Ford 534 = best bigger truck motor torque.
All of these are outstanding motors.
Cummins is a close 2nd to the PSD.
By the way did I mention that I like Ford's.
Gotta love those I6's, but i know of two (of millions made) that have had problems... one was in a wreck and overheated- never wanted to run right, and the other blew a lower radiator hose on the interstare- 15 miles with no water.... warped head. deck block, new head. cracked head... oh well.. they don't seem to do too well once they overheat...BTW-both were fuelie.
The 7.5 gas and 7.3 PSD get my votes, but honorable mention goes to the 390 FE- i have driven a 71 F250 with one.. something like 170 HP, but i could tell what that motor was made for.
BTW-has anyone had any experience with the new 6.0 PSD?? My dad has one in his 16 ton work truck (crane and all). That thing will GO when you need it to..
