Best Torque/Pulling Engine?

Although its kinda of a gas pig and a pig altogether (nothing a nice big turbo or supercharger couldn't fix) is the ford 536 industrial gas engine with about 5.3:1 gears(in our tandem grain truck) One time when we had this truck over loaded majorly our other grain truck gut stuck pretty bad in some soft/mucky sand and it to be pulled out cause we had to haul the grain rights away, anyway we used the tandem and the truck (chev, go figure) poped right out. Don't forget that the total combined weight of both trucks is 70,000lbs. Now thats what i call some torque.

Best Torque/Pulling Engine?

The oly engine I like that Ford had in their trucks is the 300I6 and the old turbo diesel. not the powerstroke.

Nothing pulls better than a 454, except a 454 with a Banks kit.

Best Torque/Pulling Engine?

I beg to differ

I've driven and own a 250 with a 460 4.10 gears E-4OD. I've pulled 12,000 pound load trailer. I was very impressed didnt get to good of milage though.

Also Got to tow a horse rig Weghing about 12,000 also with a 454. Did a Adaquate job but the good ole 460 outpulled it. The 454 would go about 35 to 45 floored on a 12% Grade and the 460 would go 50 to 60, 65 floored but spped limit was 55 so I kept it 60. I'll tell ya thouse rice burner honda and eclipse drivers sure hated geting pased by a old F-250 on a 12% grade and the real sound of the V-8 probably Agravated them of even more.

But hey this is what we do for fun up here on the Central Coast.

So I say best GAS engine for torque would be the 460.

Best Torque/Pulling Engine?

Remember when comparing engines as close as the 454 and 460, both OUSTANDING Motors in the torque department, that you must consider the state of tune.. Conditions of plugs, filters, mileage etc... I think That hands down both of these are great motors... as for the old 300 I-6, I think All it has going for it is gearing, My stepfather works at A ford garage as the Parts Manager and they have an old f-250 with the I-6 in it that I have borrowed a couple of times.. And Yes It Pulls VERY well for a 6, but it also goes VERY slow!

Best Torque/Pulling Engine?

John, I have seen the same thing. My dad's F250 with a 460 could always outpull his dad's Chevy with a 454. I am not sure about the variables involved. I do know through reading that for particular years the Fords were better than the Chevy's and vice-versa. The 460 is a good engine, its all that I've ever driven and for now it's gonna stay that way. I like it for simple economic reasons - parts are readily available, in the junkyard and the stores, no sophistocated electronics to break down, reliability, power, torque, enough sound to scare the riceburners away, overall - a good engine. The drawback would have to be fuel economy.

The 300 6 has a little less torque than the 302. You wouldnt send a boy to do a mans job.Its Big block ,Diesel or go home. Id prefer the diesel for the mileage.

300 i6? its an abomination on an otherwise clean slate of truck motors. Utterly useless motor, blows head gaskets, oh the list goes on forever.

Yes, I would have to agree, the BIG trucks with the 534 would out tow anything less than a f-650 with the gearing they have and the cubes to back it. I have a big tanker truck used for pumping out septic tanks, at IBP their grease pits are HUGE, sometimes need to take a few trips to the dump to get rid of all the grease, anyways I'll have my tank a foot from the top of the tank and it'll still pull 55 down the highway if I want it too.

With the recent series of gas motors, Id say 460, the torque curve is much better it seems than a 454, plus the gearing helps more.

Whats really funny is, if you get right down to it the 454 and the 460 are damn near the same, like the 305 and the 302, the 350 and the 351, theyre pretty much the same motors on the engineering level, with some minor tweaks that make them stand out apart from each other.

Of course, theyre really hasnt been anything too big that I couldnt pull out with my diesel yet. The fact that its an automatic makes it even better lol.

Better change that, those are fightin' words with some people here.

I've been impressed with the ones I've driven. I drove an '84 F-150 with a 300 that had 304k on the engine, and it still felt extremely strong and the only problem it had was with the carburator. My old girlfriend has a '92 F-150 300-6 with 265k on the original engine and it's still strong and reliable. Only thing she had to replace was a fuel pump in it. A friend of mine has an '86 F-150 with a 300-6 with 206k on it, one day he forgot to tighten the oil filter on it after changing the oil, and he came to school with it having no oil and it ran for 5 days like that. He finally caught it and filled it back up, and to no surprise, it's still truckin' along. If I got a beater, I'd want to have the 300 in it. It's tough, reliable, not a speed demon by no means, and I have never heard of one blowing a head gasket, and what are all of these other problems that you've had with a 300?

I love my 6 when I'm doing truck things. It doesn't seem to be effected by a load in the truck. It seems the same wether I am empty or have 1000+ pounds in the back.

The only thing I have ever seen go wron in in I6 is the cam drive gear coming apart.

Best Torque/Pulling Engine?

My first truck, in 1996 was a 1981 F-100 "Explorer" with 4 on the floor & a 300 I-6. I bought it from the original owner with 625000 Km on it (Yes, I'm Canadian) and never put any work into the engine until it started ticking @ 695000, I replaced the valve seals, and it exploded a month later with 710560 Km on it.

This makes no sense. I have been following the "Inline Six" forum at this site for about three years and blown head gaskets are not an issue. This "utterly useless motor" has been serving me quite well for the last 26 years. One of my "utterly useless" 300s took me 175,000 miles and now has nearly 200,000 under its present owner and still has not had any engine work, beyond tune ups and typical external parts like fuel pump, harmonic balancer, etc.
