So I have a dump trailer that has an adjustable coupler, which is great by the way. The previous version I had of this trailer the coupler fit snug between the adjustable rails. The current one the dealer adjusted the coupler before I drove off the lot and it sits loose between the rails. Is this normal, bad, etc...? I don't want to bend the the rails by tightening it against the coupler so I could possibly put washers in there to close the gap, or is none of that necessary?
I used a friends and the gap was much smaller. I would use washers and keep inspecting the attaching bolts for any damage.
How much weight and how far are you hauling?

The bolts are just acting as pins. I questioned the manufacturer on this last spring and was told it is not an issue and there is no need to torque the bolts to spec. I tighten mine until it sucks the rail in then double nut it.
They are 5/8's grade 8 bolts, mounted in double shear. In single shear they are rated at over 27,000 lbs. You should be ok.
Oh, ditch the ball for a pintle. Much better for a trailer that goes offroad and no chance of the coupler popping off the ball.
