Tire Selection Problem ???

Gents,

Looding to buy new tires.

97 F 250 PSD 4x4 Auto, Ext Cab.

Use: in North Dakota, 50/50 on/off road and likely bad winters in my future.

I dont need to be a bad boy with mac daddy tires, simply looking for suggestions on tires that offer solid on/off road performance, preferably quieter when on the road with good to excellent tread wear ratings.

Also, seeking advice on Size--right now running 285/75/16's -- thats what it came with.

Thank you in advance for your suggestions.

T.

I am no help, but I am in the same boat here, so I will be watching from the sidelines and eagerly awaiting the input of those who have been there and done that.

I'm running the TOYO OPEN COUNTRY A/T 265/75/16 they do really good on the road. I'd give them a 7 out of 10 for off road(mine is a 2wd) I live in La. so I can't help you out on the snow part.

I've got about 35k on them and have half tread left.

For my 04 F-250 we put the Bridgestone All-Terrains on it, and we're planning on doing the same with my 97 F-350

EDIT: I believe they now call them the Dueler series

I like my BFG Rugged Terrain (might be Rugged Trail now), Highway tire with aggressive tread.

It fits nicely between an All Terrain tire and a highway tire.

If you want something a bit more aggressive then I would go for the BFG All Terrain KO.

BFG KM2s in 315/75-R16...

The BFG ATs are really good too. Not as agressive but still good off road. I also just bought a set of Falken Rocky Mountain ATS for my wife's 4Runner and they seem to be holding up really well.

I am not a fan of the BFG AT's at all in the snow. They pack up and do not clean well. Mud/ dirt grip is sub par. The Toyo and Yokohama AT are really good tires. I just bought 2 sets of the Falken Rocky Mountains as well, after my boss bought 6 sets for the fleet trucks. They last for ever. The tires use a harder compound rubber. The snow performance is equal or better with almost any other AT tire and I thought they did great. The lateral snow traction suffered a little bit due to the tread design but nothing out of the ordinanry.

We simply went with them because they lasted so damn long on the truck towing 10k lbs all the time and they were awesome off road pulling logging equipment. Did just fine in the snow all winter long too and they are a tire that does not wonder down the road on you. Best set I have had on a truck to date...same thing the boss said. And we logging/fire mitigation in the rocky mountains so isn't that fitting...

The michelin MTS were an excellent grip tire, gripped much better than the Falkens, but lasted about half as long, eventhough their warranty was 20k miles longer.

For the best mud and snow tire I'd go past an AT though.

I just bought 6 MICHELIN LTX M/S 2
LT235/85R16E last week, probably not good enough for off road but my truck isn't either (Dually and 2WD) I don't usually drive it in the winter snow because it don't go, very bad for traction. I'll see if it's any better when the snow flies this winter.

I went with the Goodyear Pro grade Silent Armor in the stock 235R75-16. The first set I got have 35k on them and are still going. I travel a lot of gravel roads, and they are hard on tires.

I've got the E rated 285/75 BFG A/T's on my 6.0l and Im not a fan of them in any snow deeper than about 2"s. I live on a very windy river road that kills tires and I got about 30k before my last set was toast.

My 460 has E rated 315/75 Toyo M/T's on it and it rocks in the snow. I got them used and only have 4k miles on them so I cant comment on tread wear.

The 7.3l has D rated 285/75 Toyo A/T's on it and theyre nearly bald. Im going to run them as long as I can and I'll be buying some BFG M/T's this winter. I like the 285's because you dont sacrifice anything. They look good and you dont lose mpg/power. That said, I'm considering 315's just for the looks.

Also remember to pay attention to the load rating, especially if you haul much. I'll only buy E's for a diesel.

Now this is funny! I entered a drawing online (months ago) for a new set of Nitto Crosstek tires. Got an email last night saying that I had won! I guess we will see if it is the real deal or not. Only problem is that they don't make them in 16's so it looks like I will have to get some 17,18 or 20" wheels to run them on. But hey, for a free set of tires in exchange for my opinion on them, I will take it!

I am thinking of going with the 17's. That way I can stay close to my current tire size with a LT285/70 R17 tire.

What are the chances.....
