The T56 is a 6 speed. It has a detatchable bellhousing so it can be fitted to virtually any engine. There is a SBF version that will bolt to the 300/302/351 and I'm pretty sure there's a 385 series version for the 429/460.
The ratios are WAY wrong for a truck though unless you're pulling a lot of gear and aren't running tall tires.
I wouldn't trust the T56 in a truck. The weight of the truck is not what it's designed to move. Yes it will handle a great amount of input torque, but the gvwr it's rated to pull is not enough for a truck. The T56 is used in the Mustang Cobra R, Vipers, Corvettes, Camaro/Firebird, and the new Mustang Cobra.
Yes, you are correct, it's supposed to be in the new lightnings. But the towing and hauling capacities of those trucks will likely be very close to zero.
I wouldn't think twice about dropping a T-56 in a 2wd street truck. As long as you don't do any heavy towing it will hold up just fine, much better than the Mazda tranny will.
StrangeRanger is right to a certain degree about the gear ratios. Some T-56s do have a bad ratio spread for a vehicle over 4000 lbs. or so. Others are geared much better. If memory serves, the version in the Viper has the closest ratios with the units in the Camaros/Firebirds being the worst. A little reseach could clear the subject right up. There is tons of T-56 info on the net.
BTW, if you're looking for a tranny with a "hot rod" feel, you won't find it the T-56. They are known for their balky and somewhat vauge shifting feel. Take that statement with a grain of salt from a guy who is used to rowing through the gears with relatively smooth and crisp Tremec TKOs, 3550s, and T-45s.
