i bought a 99 expedition that needs an oop inspection. on the list it needs upper and lower ball joints, tie rod ends, and a bunch of other **** haha. a shop quoted me 7 hours to do the upper ball joints which i thought was a little outragous, how tough would it be to do all this work myself?
Actually the uppers are really easy as they are already in the upper control arm, so just support the lower, unbolt the knuckle, unhook the upper ball joint from the knuckle the unbolt the upper control arm from the frame. IIRC there is a youtube video on this- its on an F150 but its the same process. You can actually buy everything needed for a complete front end build on Ebay as a kit. As with all front suspension just always remember to support the lower control arm before disconnecting so when you unbolt it from the steering knuckle it wont come flying at you- it could be very dangerous.
The lower ball joint needs to be pressed in with a special tool but it is available at most auto parts stores. Tie rod ends are really easy, just count how many revolutions you turn to take the old one off and turn the new one on the same number then after all done take it for an alignment
it's an easy job. Save yourself lots of $$ and do yourself. I bought all Moog parts from Amazon when did mine. Did uppers, lowers, and tie rods all at same time
